Bound in full calf caramel, signed by Bourlier, back with five raised bands set with gold and double-dotted gold lines, gold tail date, black label, all edges marbled, marbled end pages, arms in gilt on each cover of the great French bibliophile Guillaume-Gabriel Pavée de Vendeuvre. Near Fine, slight rubbing to the boards, pencil inscription in French front end page. A lovely copy with exceptional provenance of this SCARCE early French translation of Lord Chesterfield's letters to his son.

A very good copy. Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher. He was born into slavery at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present-day Pamukkale, in western Turkey) and lived in Rome until his banishment, after which he spent the rest of his life in Nicopolis in northwestern Greece.
