Bound in full calf caramel, signed by Bourlier, back with five raised bands set with gold and double-dotted gold lines, gold tail date, black label, all edges marbled, marbled end pages, arms in gilt on each cover of the great French bibliophile Guillaume-Gabriel Pavée de Vendeuvre. Near Fine, slight rubbing to the boards, pencil inscription in French front end page. A lovely copy with exceptional provenance of this SCARCE early French translation of Lord Chesterfield's letters to his son.

(x), xxxiv, 4pp chronological table, 426pp, 5pp table, 1p other books by the publisher, appears to be free from foxing, small name in ink to front free endpaper and initials on the reverse, inner endpaper at rear has ink annotations, brown calf, part tree/part smooth, raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. A very good copy. Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher. He was born into slavery at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present-day Pamukkale, in western Turkey) and lived in Rome until his banishment, after which he spent the rest of his life in Nicopolis in northwestern Greece.
