Octavo, navy blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, fold-out map, xi, 481 pp. Very Good. Contents: Preface; Foreword: Social Life in Florida in 1845; The Movement for Statehood: Early Agitation for Statehood; The St. Joseph Convention; The Struggle for Admission; The State of Florida; Documents; Notes; Index. From Preface: This volume is issued in commemoration of the first centennial of Florida's statehood. Florida Becomes a State consists of selected documents relating to the admission of Florida to the Union, an introduction by Dorothy Dodd, Archivist in the Florida State Library, and a foreword by W. T. Cash, State Librarian, discussing social life in Florida about the time it became a state. The documents constitute a casebook in the formation of a state and are, therefore, not only useful to those interested in Florida history, but to students of the science of government as well. The introduction is more than a skillful interpretation of the documents; it is a splendid illustration of the gradual progress of Florida in surmounting obstacles on the road to statehood. Manuscript / Paper Collectible
4to. 2 pp. To a French general in St. Petersburg, recommending his brother-in law, the diplomat François Le Lorgne d'Ideville (1780-1852), who, after studying German in Dresden for three years, now intends to go to St. Petersburg to learn Russian, expecting there to achieve a position as translator for the French government: "Le jeune Lelorgne, mon beau frère, après avoir étudié trois ans la langue allemande à Dresde, se rend à St. Petersbourg, pour y apprendre le Russe. L'expectative d'un emploi d'interprête dans les Bureaux du Gouvernement soutient son rôle dans l'étude des langues du nord [.]". - Having informed him of Le Lorgne's intentions, he hopes to gain the general's good will for the same, mentioning that his portfolio is a little short of recommendations, but the two French ministers who oversaw Le Lorgne's stay in Dresden wish to send him to Russia nonetheless, emphasizing that he deserves the general's protection and hoping he will be as happy in St. Petersburg as he was in Dresden: "Il convenait, Général, que vous fussiez d'abord informé du motif qui amene ce jeune étudiant dans votre résidence, après avoir satisfait à ce devoir, permettez moi de solliciter vos bontés pour lui. Son portefeuille n'est pas chargé de recommendations; mais les deux Ministres de la République, sous les yeux des quels il a [.] vécu à Dresde, veulent bien vous l'adresser, et c'est d'ailleurs par sa propre conduite qu'il désire mériter votre bienveillante protection. J'ose espérer, qu'à cet égard, il sera aussi heureux à St. Petersbourg qu'il l'a été à Dresde [.]". - On headed stationery of the Consulate. Traces of former mounting on verso. Slightly brownstained in places.
