Injas Devoldere laat zich in zijn zoektocht leiden door het toeval. Wat hij ziet, vindt hij door te verdwalen. Hij ensceneert of manipuleert niets, maar plukt beelden uit de gevonden realiteit. Zo maakt hij van de straat een atelier, waarin hij schildert zonder te schilderen, of een theaterdecor, waarin hij een drama ensceneert zonder het te ensceneren. Hij nodigt de kijker uit om te vertragen, om langer en anders te kijken. De kunstenaar raakt niets aan, maar laat zich aanraken door de stad. Daarin ontbreekt de menselijke figuur, hoewel zijn aanwezigheid altijd voelbaar is: in elke vlek, in ieder kleurvlak, in elke kras en in het ritme van de vormen heeft de mens zijn sporen achtergelaten. De kunstenaar ziet deze sporen en vat ze in de compositie van een vierkant. Hij bevrijdt het beeld van de banaliteit waarin het gevangen zit, hij verlost het van de vergankelijkheid en hij geeft het, zorgvuldig en geduldig, aan de eeuwigheid van het kunstwerk.
