Bertolini (1711-1782) set up a legal practice in Florence before becoming an official of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1740, where he oversaw matters regarding agricultural production and related economic issues. He was a fervent admirer of Enlightenment writings, particularly those by Montesquieu. Bertolini published his Analyse raisonnée de l'Esprit des lois in 1771. Though never published with De l'Esprit des Loix during either man's lifetime, as Bertolini hoped it would be, the Analyse appeared in a 1798 collected-works edition of Montesquieu.
