Sheet Music First Edition
Original sheet music issue for the enormously popular Fox-Trot standard. First introduced during the height of the Jazz Age dance-band era, 'Sunday' quickly became a widely performed popular standard and was later recorded by major jazz and swing artists including Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Django Reinhardt, and Lester Young. The cover design features bold late-Art Deco typography surrounding a stylized weekly calendar motif with the title day dramatically circled in orange, accompanied by fashionable Jazz Age figures rendered in black, cream, and muted peach tones. An especially desirable feature of this issue is the prominent ukulele arrangement credit to May Singhi Breen (1898-1970), one of the most influential figures in the American ukulele craze of the 1920s. Breen helped popularize the instrument nationally through recordings, radio broadcasts, instructional books, and arrangements issued by Tin Pan Alley publishers. The interior and rear advertising pages provide strong period ephemera documenting the close relationship between sheet music, phonograph records, player pianos, and home entertainment culture during the mid-1920s. Particularly notable is the recurring publisher slogan: 'Get it for your Phonograph and Player Piano.' Condition: Very Good. Complete example with moderate edge wear, light corner creasing, mild age toning, and scattered handling wear consistent with age. Interior music remains clean and highly legible. Rear advertising panel survives intact and displays additional contemporary Leo Feist song promotions. Likely first edition - first printing, supported by the original 1926 copyright statement and period advertisements throughout.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dustjacket. Later Edition. ISBN . Large hardback in slipcase. No statement of later printing on copyright page. No dustjacket; bound in brown boards with slipcase. Book has slight browning at bottom page edge; otherwise a tight, sound and unmarked copy in Very Good condition. Laid in is a staplebound pamphlet with French translations of the individual essays. Slipcase has minor fading; publisher's price sticker on back. No Signature.
