Der deutsch-amerikanische Dirigent (1899-1978 war nach seinem Musikstudium in Köln Assistent Otto Klemperers an der Kölner Oper, danach musikalischer Leiter des Landestheaters Prag. 1929-33 wirkte er an der Frankfurter Oper, durfte als Jude danach aber nur noch für den Jüdischen Kulturbund tätig sein. 1936 emigrierte er zunächst nach Palästina, wo er zusammen mit dem Geiger Bronislaw Hubermann das Palestine Orchestra gründete (heute Israel Philharmonic Orchestra). 1938 kam er durch Arturo Toscanini in die USA, wo er dessen Stellvertreter beim NBC Symphony Orchestra wurde.
