Garnett, R.A.; Austen, John; Gibbings, Robert; Papé, Frank C.; Odle, Alan; Garwood, Tirzah; Hilder, Rowland; Kermode, William; Grant, Duncan; Moon, P.V.; Leighton, Clare; Wolfe, Edward (illustrator). Each volume one of 550 copies, quarto size, approx. 650 total pages, each volume signed by the author. The "Furnival Books" were a series of shorter works from young authors, some of whom would go on to be considered the best of their day. The brainchild of bookseller and publisher A. W. Steele, he published these limited edition copies under two imprints, but the entire series of twelve books were all printed by the Chiswick Press between 1930 and 1932. One of the great bonuses of this series are the frontispiece illustrations, several by some of my own favourite artists: John Austen, Robert Gibbings, Frank Papé, and Clare Leighton. Particulars on the twelve books are as follows: (1) Powys, T.F.; Warner, Sylvia Townsend (Foreword); Garnett, R.A. (Woodcut), "The Key of the Field", 1930, no. 12, 39 pp.; (2) Bates, H.E.; Garnett, Edward (Foreword); Austen, John (Line Engraving), "The Hessian Prisoner:, 1930, no. 477, 42 pp.; (3) Coppard, A.E.; Gibbings, Robert (Woodcut), "The Man From Kilsheelan", 1930, no. 180, 38 pp.; (4) Davies, Rhys; O'Flaherty, Liam (Foreword); Papé, Frank C. (Illustration), "The Stars, The World, and The Women",1930, no. 135, 53 pp.; (5) Hanley, James; Aldington, Richard (Foreword); Odle, Alan (Frontispiece), "The Last Voyage", 1931, no. 232, 73 pp.; (6) Strong, L.A.G.; Coppard, A.E. (Frontis), "The Wild Swan" (also containing "It Was the Devil's Work" and "Unclean"), 1932, no. 121, 60 pp.; (11) Benson, Stella; West, Geoffrey (Foreword); Leighton, Clare (Frontis), "Christmas Formula" (also containing "Tchotl" and "A Dream"), 1932, no. 419, 67 pp.; [and] (12) Collier, John; Sitwell, Osbert (Foreword); Wolfe, Edward (Frontis), "Green Thoughts", 1932, no. 45, 56 pp. ___DESCRIPTION: The volumes all of a uniform design, with each bound in a different colour of cloth, each with the title in gilt on both the front board and the spine, the author in gilt towards the bottom of the front board, year of publication in gilt at the tail of the spine, top edges gilt, the limitation pages found before the half-titles each signed by the author, each volume with a frontispiece by different artists; binding quarto size (10 1/8" by 6 3/8"), pagination as set forth above. ___CONDITION: The set near fine overall, the boards on most volumes clean (vol. 2 with a thin line on the back board which appears to be some sort of residue, vol. 9 with small spot of soil on the front board, and vol. 12 with what appears to be offsetting from the glue), the corners on most volumes straight and unrubbed but a few volumes lightly bumped and with minimal rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors clean and bright, and the set entirely free of prior owner markings; several volumes with sunning to the boards and most volumes with the spines sunned. Still overall a lovely set, a few condition issues to the bindings, the interiors fine, we noted several signatures unopened. ___POSTAGE: Please note that the combined size and weight of this set will necessitate additional postage, please inquire for details; International customers, also please note that any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Add to basketEtching, relief and engraving in colours, 1983, on light mauve TGL handmade paper with their blindstamp lower centre, signed and dated in pencil, numbered from the edition of 5, published by Tyler Graphics Ltd., New York, 1321 x 1321mm (52 x 52 inches). Swan Engraving Circle I is linked to Stella's wider series called Circuits (1980-84), whereby all the artworks are linked through the theme of fragmentation. Swan Engravings is one of Stella's most extensive printmaking projects to date, including twenty-five prints published over three years. The name for the series itself comes from the Swan Engraving Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut with whom Stella worked with. The present work was printed using both the methods of intaglio and relief printmaking and incorporated metal scraps and etched magnesium fragments that Stella found lying around in the Swan Engraving Company. Stella's incorporation of varying elements â" fragmented shapes, lace patterns, letters and numerals â" reminds us of early-20th century cubist collages. Once the metal collages were assembled, ink was applied and printed; the relief elements of the plates created a raised, embossed effect in each print. Stella's style was lively and spontaneous, he never hesitated when assembling the plate nor in the printing process itself, often completing the entire process in a single day in 'one hit'. His early work in the late 1950s and 1960s, particularly his Black Paintings, rejected the expressive brushwork of Abstract Expressionism in favor of precise, geometric compositions with rigid symmetry and flat, bold colors.* Stella became a leading figure in the evolution of modern art, pushing the boundaries between painting and sculpture. His works evolved from stark, hard-edged paintings to increasingly complex, three-dimensional constructions, incorporating vivid colors, dynamic shapes, and architectural depth. His innovative use of industrial materials, such as aluminum and fiberglass, broke traditional artistic conventions and cemented his status as one of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. *** Rare & Museum-Exhibited Vinyl Records A Collector s Dream *** Unique Provenance : This vinyl record comes from a specialized collection focused onalbum covers designed by world-renowned artists. Add to basketUnique cotton-pulp relief with hand-colouring and collage, 1975, on coloured HMP handmade paper, signed, dated and annotated 'T.P' in black ink on the reverse, one of 14 unique colorway trial proofs, aside from the edition of 26, published by Tyler Graphics Ltd, Bedford Village, New York, 63.6 x 52.7 x 4 cm. (25 x 20 3/4 x 1 5/8 in.) The series 'Paper Reliefs' is based on the earlier 'Polish Village Series' (1971-73) with the use of relief elements to create the geometric structures which pay homage to the complex architecture of Soviet and Polish wooden synagogues from 16th, 17th and 18th century. The titles of the 'Paper Reliefs' are names of cities, settlements or districts where such synagogues were destroyed during the Holocaust. This series is not intended to be a memorial but rather a celebration of these beautiful, intricate structures and the skilful work of the Jewish architects and craftsmen. Stella and Master Printmaker, Ken Tyler of Tyler Graphics Ltd., collaborated with paper making experts John and Kathleen Koller to make these groundbreaking reliefs. After the paper pulp was applied to the specific mould, Stella would work with the moulded paper reliefs whilst still wet to hand-colour the paper with dye, colour pulp and dry pigments. Once dry, he then hand-painted the geometric shapes within each of the 183 reliefs using acrylic, watercolour and metallic paints. Named after a town in the Grodno region of Belarus, 'Lunna Wola (V)', is a key part of the 'Paper Reliefs' series. Tyler Graphics 546; Axsom 106.5.

(21½ x 21¾ in.) Over a period of four years, Stella created a body of prints whose titles all came from 'The Dictionary of Imaginary Places' by Alberto Mangual and Gianni Guadalupi. Each work from this series is recognisable for its teaming compositions of twisting, colliding and knotted forms. The shapes appear to spill out of their sheet, seemingly trying to escape their frames. As he had done since the 'Swan Engravings', Stella employed his full palette of printmaking media in this series, to realise these compositions - including lithography, relief printing, etching, aquatint, engraving and screenprinting. The physicality of the works are as inventive and creative as the titles of the series itself. Appearing almost like a psychedelic spectrum, the imagery is deceptively random, in fact Stella constructs a composition that is tight and coherent, showing off his sophisticated design aesthetic and use of printing techniques. Their titles refer to two towns and a bay, located on the west coast of Newfoundland. In the prints, the squared and double-squared formats of interlacing protectors are framed by crisp white margins, creating an effect quite different from the overwhelming immediacy of the paintings. The regular margins create a psychological distancing, and in the prints these designs of the paintings are, in a sense, re-presented for our consideration. Axsom 50.
