Stéphane Étienne Tarnier was a French obstetrician remembered for his work involving the perinatal aspects of obstetrics, and in particular, the treatment and well-being of premature infants. In the 1870s he realized that keeping a c…onstant temperature was not sufficient for a premature infant's survival. He believed that isolation, hygiene, appropriate feeding, and a warm, humid environment were also necessary. Inspired by a device used to incubate poultry, Tarnier introduced prototypes of infant incubators Size: 10" x 12.75". B/w Engraving, Unknown Artist (illustrator).

Edition originale en librairie de la thèse d'agrégation de l'auteur. Tarnier étudie successivement les causes maternelles…et les causes foetales qui rendent l'accouchement impossible sans manoeuvre ou sans opération. Stéphane Tarnier (1828-1897) fut reçu à ce concours de 1860. Il deviendra (en 1867) chirurgien en chef de la maternité, puis professeur d'accouchement, des maladies des femmes en couches et des enfants nouveaux-nés. cf. Speert, Obstetric and gynecologic milestones, p.481 : "Tarnier was probably the nineteenth century's most astute student of the obstetric forceps and the mechanical principles underlying its use. His monograph of 1860 revealed a long-standing interest in the subject.".
