All edges untrimmed, with several pages unopened throughout. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, with a little rubbing and creasing to the extremiti…es and some toning to the cover edges and spine. The contents, with mild toning to the paper stock, are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Signed and inscribed by Theodore Stephanides in black ink to the front free endpaper "To William Cookson / with best wishes, / Theodore Stephanides / London, May 1974". The first edition of Stephanides and Katsimbalis' translation of Palamas' poetical work, first published in Greek in 1907. Theodore Stephanides (1896-1983) was a Greek-British doctor and polymath, known as a naturalist, biologist, astronomer, poet, writer and translator, although is perhaps best remembered today as the friend and mentor of Gerald Durrell. Stephanides was notably depicted by Durrell in his most famous work, My Family and Other Animals, as well as in Prospero's Cell by Lawrence Durrell, The Colossus of Maroussias by Henry Miller, and numerous film and television productions. His translations of the work of Palamas were chief amongst his efforts to promote Greek poetry. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Publication: London, Privately Printed, 1976 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 110. Condition Report: Very Good. The volume remains structurally sound with a firm text block and uncracked hinges, though the paper wrappers show some distinct signs of handling. The front wrapper bears a noticeabl…e surface scuff and paper tear to the upper right quadrant beneath the author's name, likely from the removal of a previous adhesive label. The wrappers are protected in a clear aftermarket sleeve, which has caused some faint tape ghosting and adhesive shadowing to the rear panel and interior flaps. Internally, the pages are exceptionally bright, crisp, and entirely free from foxing or shelf-wear, presenting a pristine reading experience that balances the exterior cosmetic faults. Catalogue Note: First edition thus of this collaborative English translation by Theodore Ph. Stephanides and George C. Katsimbalis. This particular copy is elevated by an exceptional and historically significant association provenance. The front free endpaper features a warm, dated presentation inscription from Theodore Stephanides to Dr. Eric Glasgow, a noted scholar and prolific writer on Greek literature. The inscription reads: "For Eric Glasgow, / with best wishes & admiration / for his many articles on Greece / & Greek literature, / Theodore Stephanides / London, 26-5-1977." Crucially, directly beneath the dedication, Stephanides has penned a complete, original four-line manuscript poem titled "Ionian Nightfall," signed with his initials "T.S." The manuscript verse reads: "Dark dancing shadows. swaying olive-trees, / a climbing moon above a mountain spire, / a silver ripple fleeing from the breeze / across a bay that crinkles into fire." This remarkable addition transforms the volume into a unique manuscript artifact. Theodore Stephanides, a polymath, poet, and famously the mentor to Gerald Durrell in Corfu, infuses this copy with immense literary value. Privately printed and already scarce in commerce, the presence of original manuscript verse and a distinguished presentation association makes this a superlative acquisition for collectors of the Durrell circle and modern Greek literature. First published in Greek in 1902, A Hundred Voices (Ekatofones) is a sequence of brief, eight-line poems by Kostes Palamas, the towering literary figure who composed the Olympic Anthem. Through these evocative verses, Palamas captures a cascade of subconscious musings, nature observations, and philosophical reflections on science, religion, and the human condition. This edition brings Palamas's vivid imagery to the English-speaking world through the sensitive translation of two giants of the Greek literary diaspora: Theodore Stephanides and George Katsimbalis (the famous inspiration for Henry Millerâs The Colossus of Maroussi).
