This is actually a compilation of essays by many writers about ancient and early Asian and European history with the addition of a great many illustrations. The book has sound hinges and is not cocked. There are a few words on the first free endpage; otherwise pages are clean, unmarked and undamaged. Exterior covers are clean and the gilt lettering on the spine is bright. There is a small bump on the back cover and one shallow dent in the top edge of the back cover. No bumped corners or rubbing to extremities. The dust jacket is clean with light toning (age tanning) to the white portions (inside flaps). It has a single small tear and a light crease at the top edge of the inside front flap and a couple of other light creases near the top edge. Very little wear otherwise. It has been put in a clear archival sleeve to keep it looking great. The book, dust jacket and sleeve will be bubble-wrapped and carefully packed in a sturdy box to ensure safe transit. This is a heavy, oversize book that will probably require extra funds for shipping outside of the United States. Hard Cover. First Edition. First UK Edition, First Printing. Publisher's brown boards lettered in gilt to the spine. Boards bright and clean. No previous owner's inscriptions. A VG++ copy with a bookseller's ticket to the front paste-down and an attractive book-plate to the verso of the title page. Very slight pushing (hardly worth mentioning) at the head and tail of the spine. No dustwrapper but certainly good enough to take one. NB: Edward Ashdown Bunyard (18781939) was England's foremost pomologist (student of apples) and a significant gastronome and epicure in the 1920's and 30's. He wrote three books of national significance: A Handbook of Hardy Fruits (192025), The Anatomy of Dessert (1929), and The Epicure's Companion (1937, edited with his sister, Lorna). His family was the owner of one of England's most significant fruit nurseries, founded in 1796 in Kent. In his written work, Bunyard was important for his trenchant and enlightening explication of the charm of apples, surely England's most noble garden product, as well as pears and other fruits. Bunyard's life ended tragically with his suicide in 1939. Photographs/scans available upon request.
