Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Friedrich Steub, Adol Oberlander, Toby Rosenthal, and Max Coester (illustrator). First Edition. A very good example of nineteenth-century German illustrative art, this is one of the volumes in the famed Munchener Bilderbogen series originally published as an educational tool for children and the public. They were in great demand and highly regarded in their day for both their literary and artistic value, but few are now for sale. This copy of volume 26 has ornately illustrated colored boards, detached, with rubbing and light soiling plus scuffing. Endpapers (also detached) show mild wear and tear to edges and a crease to top corner of the final paper. Remainder of book is stitched and contains ten 24 x 43 cm folded sheets or broadsides, each with colored cartoons (with one exception) telling an entertaining story. The sheets are in very good condition with only light fading, no wrinkling, no foxing and no tears with the exception of a small, lower-corner tear to one broadside. The art work represents the finest examples of illustrated art in Germany at the time. All but one are color-tinted. The only black-and-white broadside is number 616, "Polichinel-Spiel" by Friedrich Steub (1844-1903), tells a story in black shadows, or silhouettes, (fashionable since the eighteenth century in Europe) and shows the influence of the Punch and Judy tradition in theater. The 10 sheets herein are numbered: 601, 603-610, 612. Similar sheets can be found for sale on the internet art market as separate broadsides. Other major illustrators represented are Adol Oberlander, Toby Rosenthal, and Max Coester. Quite rare, especially considering the bright quality of the colors and bold sharpness of images and the type.
