Andreas Joseph Freiherr von Stifft (30.11.1760 Röschitz, Niederösterreich - 16.6.1836 Wien-Schönbrunn) studierte Medizin in Wien und wurde 1784 zum Doktor der Arzneykunde promoviert. Nach Tätigkeit als praktischer Arzt in Wien verfasste er sein zweibändiges Hauptwerk "Praktische Heilmittellehre" (1790/92), das ihm hohes Ansehen einbrachte. 1795 gewann er mit einer Schrift zur Reorganisation der medizinisch-chirurgischen Josephs-Akademie einen Preis und wurde daraufhin zum zweiten Stadtphysikus und Magister sanitatis ernannt, 1796 zum Hofarzt und 1798/99 zum k.k. Leibarzt Kaiser Franz II./I. 1803 wurde Stifft Protomedicus, Direktor des medizinischen Studiums und Präses der Medizinischen Fakultät, später außerdem Rektor der Universität (1804/05, 1820/21), Mitglied der Studienhofkommission und Sanitätsreferent im Staats- und Konferenzrat; er führte mehrere grundlegende Studienordnungen ein und reformierte das Gesundheitswesen des Kaiserreichs. Stifft gilt als Schlüsselfigur der österreichischen Medizinverwaltung und als einer der geistigen Wegbereiter der späteren Wiener Medizinischen Schule; er initiierte 1811 die "Medicinischen Jahrbücher des kaiserl. königl. österreichischen Staates" und war lange deren Herausgeber.
