Lacramioara Stoenescu ha solo nove anni quando una notte la Securitate, la polizia segreta romena, irrompe in casa per una perquisizione pretestuosa, preleva il padre e lo conduce in una prigione nel nord della Romania, senza alcuna prova, senza un processo né la possibilità di difendersi. La sola colpa di Corneliu è quella di appartenere a una classe sociale borghese, quindi "nemica" del proletariato in quel clima di furore ideologico alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. A causa di ciò, Lacramioara, assieme alla madre e alla nonna materna, è deportata in un villaggio nel nord della Moldavia, dopo un viaggio allucinante in un vagone per bestiame durato una settimana.
