Ink inscription to front endpaper. Dustwrapper protected with a removable clear wrapper. The Batsford books of the 1930s-1950s occupy a sweet spot between reference work and decorative object. Their appeal now lies as much in the vibrant dustwrappers - modernist in spirit, pastoral in subject - as in the texts themselves. Together the book and wrapper form a coherent, collectible aesthetic: bright, optimistic, and unmistakably of their period, yet still wonderfully contemporary. Size: 10 x 16 cms. This book unravels the story of "The Inward Light" a drama that engages with the momentous events of the American Civil War through the lens of a pacifist Quaker family. As the conflict erupts, the Worth and Baring families face a harrowing trial of their faith and principles, their beliefs on peace agonizingly juxtaposed with the escalation of violence. The quiet, virtuous life the Quakers have long lived on the American frontier is abruptly shattered by the national crisis, setting neighbor against neighbor, and brother against brother. This period drama explores the devastating impact of war on personal relationships and the moral dilemmas it evokes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Stratton, Heath Robinson, McCormick, Davis and Norbery (illustrator). 1st ed. 4to, full blue cloth with color pictorial cover in black, white, orange and brown with gilt letters, very heavy covers with beveled edges. The book is so thick we get an entirely different illustration in the same colors on the spine, of a witch materializing from a swirling fire. Black endpapers. All edges gilt. 51 illustrations in line by W. Heath Robinson, Helen Stratton, A.D. McCormick, A.L. Davis and A.E. Norbury. It's illustrated on nearly every single page, with large drawings at that. Very impressive. Robinson contributes 18 full page and 189 smaller line drawings [Beare, pp. 113]. Stratton is an extremely underappreciated artist; this and her solo volume, Hans Anderson's Fairy Tales (also Newnes, 1899), are two of her major works that deserve more attention. She's one of our favorite nineties illustrators, right alongside Heath Robinson and the similarly innovative Alice Woodward. Modest wear to all edges, both endpapers are split with spine cracked and amateur tape repair. But the binding remains tight. Overall it's still a quite solid copy of of a fragile item that we rarely see.
