[.] Den Uebergangenen, den kleinen Leuten, deren Not er geteilt hatte, sollte seine Arbeit gehören, ihnen wollte er das Licht des Geistes spenden, wie er auch politisch auf der Linken stand. [.] Das weist Strickler die Stellung in der Wissenschaft an, dass er mit der volksbildenden Schriftstellerarbeit die fruchtbarste Quellenforschung verband. Dieweilen er auf dem vernachlässigten zürcherischen Staatsarchiv Ordnung schaffte, gab er 1873 und 1876 in zwei Bänden die eidgenössischen Abschiede der Reformationszeit von 1521 bis 1532 heraus; das Urteil hat sie als die besten der Sammlung bezeichnet. Von der Grösse des Gegenstandes ergriffen, wollte er ihn dem Volk erschliessen und arbeitete ihn um in die fünf handlichen Bände.
