Text by Stringer, photographs by Ries. First edition., 4to., original black boards printed in white. Pictorial dust jacket. New York, William Sloane Associates. Spine of jacket faded with some wear to extremities, and a little wear to the ends of the spine. With an undated (but judging from a bookseller's note on the endpaper, perhaps from the mid 1970s) gift inscription to David Cornwell "David from Marie". The dust jacket blurb introduces the book "In magnificent photographs and text, a portrait of the people, large and small, leaders and led, who must remake Germany in their own image." Stringer (with that name, she was indeed a journalist) met the German emigré photographer Ries in New York, who fought with the American army in Asia. He made his name as a photojournalist covering the post war reconstruction of Germany - his most famous photograph shows children on a pile of rubble watching an American plane coming in to land in Berlin.  From the library of David Cornwell aka John Le Carré. Maggs Bros. Ltd., Catalogue 1526, John Le Carré: Books from The Library of Jane and David Cornwell at Tregiffian, Item 231.
