Paperback. Condition: Very Good. My Life in Propaganda is Magda Stroińska's personal account of growing up with communist propaganda in Eastern Europe. She looks at the influence of her family history that contradicted what she was taught at school, the cognitive and emotional effects of compulsory school readings, socialist realist art and film, Radio Free Europe and Voice of America and their role in shaping her generation's collective view of the world. The book demonstrates that democracy can never be taken for granted. Through her chosen field of linguistics, she analyzes ways in which propagandistic language, such as 'doubletalk, ' Orwellian 'Newspeak, ' 'weasel words, ' and, more colloquially, 'bullshit, ' is used to distort reality. This book demonstrates that democracy can never be taken for granted.…

Condition: Sehr gut. DEA. 138 S. edition suhrkamp. REGENBOGENREIHE. Geringe Alters - und Gebrauchsspuren. Sonst sauberes und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. -----Inhalt. Paperback. Condition: New. The relationship between language and various kinds of non-linguistic behavior has been of great fascination for many of those working in the fields of cultural anthropology, linguistics, and philosophy, or, broadly understood, cultural studies. The authors in this volume explore this relationship in a number of cultures and social contexts and discuss the problem of linguistic relativism and its application to several areas of social interaction across cultures. The authors deal with such questions as how language and culture intersect resulting in different points of view on reality that are all equally authentic and rooted in experience. The question of the influence of language and culture on our perceptino of physical and social reality is re-examined for such domains as politics, commerce, working with people, religion, and gender relations.…

Paperback. Condition: New. 'Exile' means a prolonged, usually enforced absence from one's home or country. There is no paradigm for an exilic existence and no prescription of how to heal the loss of one's home and one's identity. Exiles move in space, migrating from one place to another, but they are trapped in time. They long for what they have lost and fear what is yet to come. Like the Roman god Janus, they constantly look both ways, often lacking language that would help them to reconnect with the world. This volume examines the process of the exile's self-translation by rediscovering a way of expression for the ensnared experience. It requires a new language so that the self may take a new shape. By discussing the unavoidable losses wrought upon immigrants, exiles and refugees by the mere fact of being displaced, the authors hope to foster a better understanding of these problems and help to rebuild shattered identities and ruined lives.…
