Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. p/b 140 pages, plus map, condition is very good. This burgh survey weaves together a highly readable summary of the recorded information on Dunfermline's history and archaeology. Dunfermline was the seat of Malcolm Canmore and here he married Margaret. Several of their sons ware kings of Scotland and with royal patronage the Benedictine Abbey became one of the most important monasteries in Scotland. It was the birth or burial place of many Scottish kings, notably King Robert the Bruce. The medieval burgh flourished by serving the needs of visiting royalty and humbler pilgrims to the shrine of St Margaret. Then the second half of the nineteenth century saw the rapid growth of damask linen manufacture in grand Victorian factories, the last survivors now being converted to other uses. This period of prosperity, together with the generosity of Andrew Carnegie, endowed Dunfermline with many fine buildings - some now in reduced circumstances. The authors draw on their detailed knowledge and the researches of the many volunteers in the Dunfermline Burgh Survey; Community Project to provide timely guidance on Dunfermline's rich archaeological potential.…
