22.2x14.5 cm, pp. 1-12, 2 illustrations (on front and inside front wrapper) and 2 maps (on rear and inside rear wrapper), original pictorial gray wrappers printed in black, stapled. First edition. A prospectus for an incredibly risky land scheme in San Bernardino County issued by Wilde & Strong, General Real Estate Agents and Land Auctioneers. Promotes land along the Minneola Canal (owned by the Southern California Improvement Company) being dredged to bring water to desert land. The two maps are: "Map of the Minneola Canal System ." on the rear cover, and "Map of Southern California Showing Location of Minneola Valley and Surrounding Country" on the inside of the rear wrapper. An article "Minneola Canal System All Right" in the January 1896 "Rural Californian" sheds light on the project: "The Southern California Improvement Co., who are building the Minneola Canal in San Bernardino County, have been greatly handicapped by the stringent financial times. They nevertheless succeeded in partially completing their irrigation system and have developed over 1500 inches of water and felt hopeful of obtaining sufficient funds to complete the work which will assure them unquestionably an additional 4000 inches. Being much pressed by some smaller creditors, and legal proceedings having been instituted in some cases, it was deemed advisable to place the property in the hands of a Receiver. This was so ordered at the request of the Receiver of the Atlantic and Pacific Railway who held a mortgage of $20,000 and Mr. F. C. Guy general freight agent of the Southern California Railway was appointed as such. This step has been taken entirely in the interest of both the Company and the creditors and is a friendly suit. It is contemplated to reorganize and place every creditor on an equal footing. In the meanwhile the Receiver will complete the work. Considerable water rights have been sold while the liabilities are in the neighborhood of $77,000, and the assets are from $450,000 to $500,000. Wilde & Strong are the General Agents for the sale of water rights of this Company. They have shown their faith in this development by purchasing about 800 inches of water. These water rights are not subject to mortgage or other encumbrances and are not in any way affected by the temporary embarrassment of the above company. The only interest this Company retains in its water rights sold is the annual rental for the delivery or distribution of the water during the irrigating season." However, the Minneola System was not "all right." In 1901 a complaint was entered at the office of the San Bernardino County Clerk "against Minnie Dieterle and her husband, William Dieterle, the Minneola Town Company and others, for the collection of a note for $2375, dated Los Angeles. May 25, 1896, signed by Minnie and her husband and secured. Nothing had been paid on either principal or interest on the note. The note was secured by deed of water from the Minneola canal and mortgage on the town site of Minneola . This is the final roundup of what was one of the wildest land boom schemes that ever took in the tenderfoot in Southern California. The only water was to come from the undertow of the Mojave River, after it sinks in the sand, and after spending all the money available in dredging a canal in the sand passing the town of Dagget on the desert, the water was insufficient to supply any demands upon it, and the dupes who invested in the town of Minneola, named after 'Minnie,' on the note, the town went back to the desert again. At one time it was a school district, with a dozen or more pupils, but as that was part of the boom scheme it did not last long. The town site lies on the Santa Fe a few miles east of Daggett, and corner lots, including the site of the 'University' and elegant tourist hotel and high school, can be purchased very reasonably at present. The whole was a boom bubble" (The San Bernardino County Sun, 7 February 1901, p. 7). "Water is essential to life in the desert, and as the population of non-miners grew, locals began thinking of diversifying into agriculture to keep the area alive. In anticipation, they began a program to carry water from the Mojave River toward Daggett through a dam and ditch system. Today the Daggett Ditch, also known as the Minneola Canal, is one of the oldest historic irrigation projects on the Mojave River. The Mojave River is largely an underground waterway, with water flowing beneath the sand and rarely visible at the surface; it is sometimes referred to as the "Upside-Down River." In 1893, a company was formed to try to build a submerged dam that would impound and then divert water into an irrigation ditch. Stock for the new company was issued, on the premise that water would generate electricity to sell to the mines and mills at Calico and pay for the ditch, thereby providing the farmers and citizens of Daggett with a free supply of water. Homesteading claims for over 1,800 acres of land were filed with the federal government in anticipation of the new water system. Even though the dam was built, the project failed, creating less than three percent of what was needed to realize those high hopes. In 1901, four individuals, including Theodore Strong Van Dyke and his son Dix Van Dyke, formed a new company and started to improve the old dam and line the old Daggett Ditch. Through their efforts, they were able to bring irrigation to 320 acres of new farm land east of Daggett (including the Van Dykes' ranch) by 1902. This was the first large area to be irrigated in the Mojave Desert. The dam was located in the Mojave River northeast of the Marine Corps Logistics Base today. The earthen ditch delivered water ten miles from the dam and its associated artesian wells to irrigate orchards and alfalfa fields in the six miles between Minneola and Daggett. With the addition of water, the Van Dyke ranch became the first place in California after leaving the Colorado River to find hay and alfalfa for tea. Signed.

Condition: Very good. - General Donald McLeod's autograph on a 2-5/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide buff white card. Signed "Genl. Donald McLeod, Age Ninety Nine, West Cleveland" in an understandably slightly shaky hand given his advanced age (McLeod was 101 years old when he passed away 2 years later). The edges of the card are slightly darkened with some minor soiling. Very good. Born in Scotland, Donald McLeod (1779-1879) joined the British navy in 1803 and subsequently switched to the infantry in 1808. McLeod came to be regarded as a British War Hero following his participation in several battles against Napoleon's forces, including Waterloo, and subsequent pivotal battles for Colonial Canada. Settling in Prescott, Ontario he became a major in the militia and a school teacher. McLeod published a newspaper which pushed for political reform in Canada. A Tory mob trashed his printing office in retaliation after Mackenzie's attack on Toronto and the Battle of Montgomery's Tavern. An angry McLeod fled to the U.S. to join up with Mackenzie. At 59, he came to the Patriot War with more war experience than any others and soon found himself a general leading over 500 men over 500 miles during the Winter. The U.S. neutrality law forbade attacks on Canada, and McLeod's weapons and supplies were confiscated by U.S. officers. Though it was illegal to attack Canada according to the neutrality law, it was not illegal to plan and prepare to attack the U.S.'s Northern neighbor. So, on February 24, 1838, General McLeod led his troops to Fighting Island in Upper Canada armed with but 6 muskets and a small field cannon. The British, alerted by U.S. General Hugh Brady, met McLeod's forces with 400 well-armed troops. Needless to say McLeod and his men were forced to retreat back over the U.S. border where General Brady waited to arrest them. Although he and most of his men managed to avoid immediate capture, McLeod was eventually arrested but he was soon acquitted by a sympathetic jury. He joined Dr. Charles Duncombe and others in Lockport, NY to form the Canadian Refugee Relief Association which sought to raise funds to conduct warfare against Britain's occupation of Canada. Attending the Hunters Lodge convention in Cleveland, Ohio, the group of Canadian rebels appointed McLeod their Secretary of War and launched two more unsuccessful attacks on Canada. U.S. authorities finally cracked down and, combined with impending reforms in Canada, subdued threats of war along their Northern border. In 1846, Britain pardoned the rebels and McLeod returned to take a Canadian government job. He later returned to Cleveland after his retirement where he lived out the rest of his 101 year life. Donald McLeod is the author of "A Brief Review of the Settlement of Upper Canada by U.E. Loyalists and Scotch Highlanders, in 1783; And of the grievances which Compelled the Canadas to Have Recourse of Arms in Defence of their Rights and Liberties, in the Years 1837 and 1838; Together with a Brief Sketch of the Campaigns of 1812, '13, '14: With an account of the Military Executions, Burnings, and Sackings of Towns and Villages, by the British, in the Upper and Lower Provinces, during the Commotionof 1837 and '38" [Cleveland 1841].A scarce autograph.

Major General George Veazy Strong (USMA '04, 1880-1946), in 1943 as the Assistant Chief of Staff of the Army Intelligence Unit (G-2)--a position of enormous importance--delivered his very sober and reasonable summation on the strength of the Axis forces before the U.S. Congress (on October 20 and 21, 1943). which was printed in this report in mimeograph. 4to. Written in ink, and signed at the end by Royce on the verso of a single leaf. Several small holes [text unaffected], a few closed tears [two archival tape repairs]. Very Good. This unusual, insightful document illuminates the laws of war applicable to the Civil War. Royce's Petition seeks justice for Confederate Captain Frank R. Gurley. Royce sent it to the Confederate Commission of Exchange. Its author, Confederate Captain Moses Strong Royce, was captured in Tennessee and imprisoned at Nashville. Gurley, Royce's cell-mate, had killed Union General Robert McCook of Ohio, near Huntsville, Alabama, in August 1862. In October 1863 Union forces captured Gurley and charged him with murdering McCook. Gurley, Union officials claimed, was a guerrilla who shot McCook while the General was lying in an ambulance. Southerners claimed that Gurley was not a guerrilla, but a regular soldier in the Confederacy's 4th Alabama Cavalry; and that he killed McCook according to the laws of war. Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper fanned the flames, claiming that lawless Confederate guerrillas murdered the general; feelings ran high. "US General Grant wrote CS General Hardee in December of 1863 and said that although Gurley was a member of the Confederate army, that did not preclude him from being tried for having committed a foul murder" [online Huntsville-Madison County Public Library essay, 'Frank B. Gurley's 1866 Diary']. Having escaped from prison in March 1864, Royce pleads Gurley's case. "He was confined in a cell for sixty-eight days and allowed only about one hour a day for exercise and was put upon trial for the killing of Genl. McCook. He was obliged to employ counsel to defend himself at an expense of 2500 dollars in greenbacks. The evidence produced completely exonerated him of anything like murder, and the argument of his counsel was a complete vindication of his right as a soldier and an officer to do all that he did in bringing Genl. McCook to his death. "When the trial was nearly ended four communications by flag of truce were sent to the court and were there read - one from Lt. Col. Hambrick, one from Genl. Forrest, one from Genl. Hardee and one from Genl. Johnston," assuring that Gurley was not a guerrilla but a duly enrolled member of the Confederate military forces. Nevertheless Gurley was found guilty and sentenced to death. "The undersigned believes that if an effort were to be made by the Confederate Commission of Exchange to have Capt. Gurley exchanged the Federal authorities would immediately send him forward for that purpose, and as a friend of Capt. Gurley the undersigned respectfully requests General Johnston to use his influence in procuring the exchange of Capt. Gurley. Respectfully submitted, M. S. Royce." Even after War's end, the dispute continued. Gurley, having been released from prison in an administrative snafu, was re-arrested, charged, but finally released and placed on parole in April 1866.
