Barr et environs, s.e., 1810-1854 ; in-8, 249 pp., broché, couverture bleue ancienne de consolidation, usagée, avec, sur le plat supérieur, cette inscription "Journal des visites de malades hors de Barr et en ville, depuis 1810" (petites déchirures et manques de papier) ; emboîtage de toile bleue moderne. Très intéressant manuscrit, unique et rare témoignage de l'activité d'un médecin cantonal alsacien, sur une période s'étendant du premier au second Empire. Le premier feuillet - qui était probablement la couverture originelle - porte le titre suivant : Journal des Visites de Malades soignés à Barr et ses Environs en 1810, 1811,? [jusqu?en 18]43. En réalité, le journal couvre la période de 1810 à 1854, et traite de deux secteurs géographiques: les localités environnantes de Barr (pp. 1 à 178) ; la ville de Barr elle-même (pp. 181 à 249). Charles Sultzer (Strasbourg 1770 - Barr 1854), illustre médecin cantonal de Barr, a fait ses visites jusqu?à ses derniers jours, à 84 ans. Henri Gachot, précédent possesseur de cet ouvrage, avait noté p. 178: «Dernière visite à Walff le 20 juillet 1854. Décédé le 31 juillet 1854» et p. 249: «Dernière visite à Barr le 24 juillet 1854. Décédé le 31 juillet 1854». Charles Sultzer a fait de brillantes études à Strasbourg en botanique (il a été élève de Charles Hermann) et en médecine (formé à la chirurgie par le chirurgien en chef de l?Hôpital de Strasbourg, François Laurent Marchal). Il avait été nommé chirurgien-aide major dans un bataillon de la Garde Nationale de Strasbourg. Séjournant à Paris, il refusa cependant la proposition faite par Cuvier d?une carrière au Jardin des Plantes. Il publia une thèse en médecine, alors considérée comme brillante, qui inspira Laënnec (Dissertation sur un ver nouvellement découvert et décrit sous le nom de bicorne rude, Strasbourg J. A. Fischer, 1802). Aux perspectives parisiennes ou strasbourgeoises, il préféra la campagne alsacienne. Médecin cantonal de Barr et environs à partir de 1803, il resta néanmoins en contact avec les autorités académiques, promu professeur agrégé libre de médecine, et correspondant de l?Académie de médecine de Paris. Ses qualités d?anatomiste le firent solliciter pour des expertises anthropologiques, ainsi pour l?analyse des ossements de Sainte Odile en 1836 et 1841 (au Mont Sainte-Odile) et de ceux de Sainte Richarde (à Andlau) en 1841. Le contexte familial de Charles Sultzer est assez remarquable: il était le fils de Jean-Michel Sultzer qui avait été membre du conseil général de la ville de Strasbourg dans les années 1793 à 1794 et auquel on attribue le sauvetage de la flèche de la Cathédrale de Strasbourg au moment de la tourmente révolutionnaire; sa s?ur a été la Supérieure générale des S?urs de la Charité (Toussaint), ordre qu?elle a refondé. Dès les premières pages de ce Journal de visites, le ton est donné. Quelques notes précisent : "ne sont point inscrits beaucoup de malades, dont les honoraires sont certains, et soumis à leur appréciation"; ou encore : "d?Epfig à Barr 5 kilomètres", "de Mittelbergheim à Barr, 2 kilomètres, d?après taxation du tribunal"; enfin "Michel Willm, d?Heiligenstein, ivrogne, me doit 10 fr. depuis bien longtemps?". Au dos de la page de titre, Sultzer a placé quelques phrases en exergue, avec une ironie un peu amère, dont celle-ci: "Invoqués comme des dieux au milieu du danger, vous serez souvent oubliés comme eux". Il note ensuite ses visites sur trois colonnes: date / visites en dehors / ordonnances données, prescriptions, recettes. Il se rend, par exemple, à la Cense de Saint-Gorgon (aujourd?hui disparue, à mi-chemin entre Ottrott et le pèlerinage du Mont Sainte-Odile), à Itterswiller, Stotzheim, Obernai, Meistratzheim, Schléstat [Sélestat], Zellweiler [Zellwiller], Oberottrott (Ottrott-le-Haut], Walff [Valff]? Fischer - chez Armand Koenig, an IX - 1801, in-4, [4]-52 pages, titre-frontispice et 2 planches gravées à l'aquatinte, demi-basane blonde de l'époque à coins vélin, dos orné de filets dorés, pièce de titre grenat, Édition originale, rare, de la thèse de Charles Sultzer, jeune médecin de l'École de médecine de Strasbourg ; elle est ornée d'un charmant titre-frontispice en couleurs montrant un génie qui s'avance vers un microscope pour observer le "bicorne rude", qu'il porte dans un bocal, et de deux planches d'après dessins de l'auteur, figurant les observations microscopiques du prétendu parasite : avec et sans membrane, le détail de la structure et des "cornes" pourvues de poils ainsi qu'une coupe latérale et sagittale. Charles Sultzer (1770-1854) présente ici la découverte d'une nouvelle espèce d'un ver intestinal, le "Bicorne rude" (Ditrachyceros rudis), trouvé dans les selles d'une femme de 26 ans présentant des troubles digestifs. La description du parasite est confirmée en 1804 par Laennec dans son Mémoire sur les vers vésiculaires. Par la suite, on constata que le "bicorne rude" n'était autre qu'une graine de mûrier noir (Morus nigra). Le fruit, non mûr, ingérée par la patiente, présentait effectivement deux cornes, restes des stigmates de la fleur. "Néanmoins ce faux parasite eut une assez longue existence jusqu'à ce que Bremser [parasitologiste autrichien (1767-1827)] le considère comme un pseudo-parasite." Cette thèse erronée constitua un "excellent exemple d'errement de l'esprit humain et d'observations microscopiques mal interprétées" et révéla la difficulté particulière du diagnostic microscopique des éléments parasitaires des selles.
