Jacket has some light wear to the edges and had the price clipped off the inside flap. Sun fading to spine. Has had a mylar protective cover applied to the jacket, but can be safely removed without damage. 309 pages, with extensive bibliography. 8.5" X 5.75" X 1.4" Shortly before Communist China exploded her first hydrogen bomb on June 17th, 1967, four huge, brightly colored balloon soared into the blue sky over the Takla Mahon desert, trailing long red and white banners bearing slogans of Mao Tse-tung. This successful joining of technology and ideology would have taken place sometime; but the shocking truth is that, without the unintentional aid of United States authorities, China's nuclear weapons and the rockets to carry them would not have been built until the late 1970s. "The China Cloud" is the story of how some 80 Chinese aerodynamicists, nuclear physicists, and metal research experts, trained in the United States, were driven from this country on a wave of communist "witch-hunting". It is also the story of how these scientists were welcomed and honored on their return to China and, at great expense to the national economy, were given the materials to make China a nuclear power second only to the USSR and the USA. Of communist China's 200 most eminent scientists, more than three quarters received their training abroad, and of these, the top 80 received their training in America at Caltech, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Michigan, Chicago, California, Colombia, and other universities. There they studied and taught until forced out of their jobs and out of the United States by investigators of the "Communist conspiracy" during the 1940s and early 1950s. Ryan and Summerlin tell in detail the stories of Tsien Hsue-shen, the leading Chinese rocket expert and former Caltech Goddard Professor of Aeronautics, and Chao Chung-yao, deputy director of The Institute for Atomic Energy in China, another Caltech alumnus. Then they take the reader inside communist China for a description of the political and economic cataclysms of the past 10 years; from these upheavals the scientist emerged unscathed to make China an unwelcome member of the nuclear Club. The China Cloud tells how they did it with full assistance from the various "red squads" and federal services of the United States of America.
