Add to basket8vo. (194 x 144 mm). pp. 166, (i), (i). Leaf with half-title, leaf with title recto and justification verso, 'Introduction' and printed text recto and verso illustrated with 21 hors-texte plates with monochrome illustration recto and verso on glossy paper, final leaves with 'Table'. Original publisher's geranium printed wrappers with flaps, geranium front wrapper with titles in pink and a background of small black printed text listing Surrealist artists and writers, rear wrapper with advertisements. A very scarce example of Georges Hugnet's 'Petite Anthologie Poétique du Surréalisme' on geranium paper. From the edition limited to 2,028 with this one of a very small number of copies on geranium paper with the wrappers also on geranium paper; this paper is not detailed in the justification and all remaining copies were issued in a green wrapper - the typography remains the same - with the text on white papier de Montval à la cuve (for the édition de tête) or on Alfa bouffant (for the remaining 2,000 copies). As the issue of the book on geranium paper is not described in the justification it seems likely that very few copies of Hugnet's 'Petite Anthologie Poétique du Surréalisme' were printed on this paper. That this copy is bound by Hugnet too marks this as an exceptional copy. Hugnet's binding, making use of brilliant silver and scarlet metallic papers, is both highly unusual and visually striking. That Hugnet also makes use of hands, a common and recurrent motif and obsession for the Surrealists, and a motif used for other bindings by Paul Bonet, is compelling. Also included, tipped-in to the initial blank before the half-title, is the publisher's announcement for the book. A large folded sheet of thin white paper, the announcement itself is printed in black in mirror writing to the verso of the sheet: to read the text properly one must view it through the recto of the thin paper. The 'Petite Anthologie Poétique du Surréalisme' on papier géranium as here is necessarily scarce and we locate only André Breton's copy (lot 649 in his sale in 2003), that of Pierre Leroy bound by Leroux and with a literary cadavre exquis by Lise Deharme, Alberto Giacometti, Valentine Hugo and Paul Eluard (lot 226 in his sale in 2004) and a further copy in a binding by Georges Hugnet. The édition de tête of 20 copies and the 8 copies printed for the collaborators on the edition were issued with an original etching by Picasso. '. (Patrick Cramer). [see Cramer 22 for the édition de tête].

Add to basket8vo. (236 x 154 mm). [2 bifolia including wrappers]. Printed title, verso and following recto with introduction by André Breton and 4 pages with the catalogue, printed text in French throughout. Original printed wrappers, stapled s issued, titles to front cover in black. The rare catalogue for the seminal 'Exposition Surréaliste d'Objets' held at Charles Ratton's gallery in 1936. The week long exhibition displayed objects of all kinds - the interplay of modern and ancient, original and derived, inspirational and inspired was entirely novel - and from a number of important collections. The more traditional objects included 'Objets Naturels', 'Objets Trouvés', 'Objets Américains' and 'Objets Océaniens' but even some of these objects were recontextualised ('Objets Naturels Interpretés' and 'Objets Trouvés Interpretés') or altered ('Objets Naturels Incorporés'). In the catalogue these objects are then followed by 'Objets Mathématiques' (none are listed), the singular category of Duchamp ('Ready-Made et Ready-Made Aidé') listing his 'Porte-Bouteille' and 'Why not sneeze [, Rose Sélavy]?' and the much larger grouping 'Objets Surréalistes'. The objects themselves were taken from the collections of Man Ray, Lise Deharme, Paul Chadourne, Georges Salles, Mme. Divonne Charles Ratton, Paul Eluard, André Breton, Paul Rosenberg etc. 'Objets Surréalistes' featured 71 objects by various Surrealists but of particular note are Meret Oppenheim's famous 'Tasse, soucoupe et cuillère revêtues de fourrure', Hans Bellmer's articulated 'Poupée', 'Jointure de boules', Georges Hugnet's 'Objets-Livres', Duchamp's "La Bagarre d'Austerlitz', Oscar Dominguez's 'Pérégrinations de Georges Hugnet' and other objects by Breton, Eluard, Claude Cahun, Gal and Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Marcel Jean, René Magritte, Man Ray, Mesens, Miró, Roland Penrose, Picasso and Yves Tanguy.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Large 8vo. (4) pp. 5 handwritten lines. Original cardboard wrappers. Interesting inscription to the painter James William Frater (1887-1969), who is addressed as the "corrector of Heraclitus' Bridge", one of Magritte's paintings on view at the exhibition: "A James Frater (ou, plutôt à Jim) le correcteur du Pont d'Heréclite, l'allègre chiffoneur des papiers bruns, le nouveau Jéovah qui fait un homme rapide du carton immobile". The booklet entitled "Bulletin Internationale Kunst", no. 9, of the Esher Surrey Art Galleries, had been printed for a Magritte exhibition in The Hague (14 November to 5 December 1936). Frater was a student of Jan Toorop and collaborated with Mondrian and Escher. Apparently he had contributed in some form to the painting mentioned in the inscription. The assembled signatures of the writers Paul Colinet (1898-1957), Jean Émile Louis Scutenaire (1905-87), his wife Irène Hamoir (1906-94), and the painter Magritte (1898-1967) bear beautiful testimony to the early years of the Belgian Surrealist movement. - The four-page booklet contains a portrait of Magritte, a short text on the artist, a list of 26 works on display, and two reproductions of paintings on display. Several addenda, including a page of the "Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant", 25 November 1936, with a review of the exhibition entitled "Plastische Kunsten, Rene Magritte, Kunstzaal Esher Surrey". - Booklet shows some browning to the upper margins and a rust stain from the staple.
