Gift inscription in ink on half-title dated "Xmas 1947." Fair only. No marks to text. The staples are holding the pages securely, although the attachment to the cover is tenuous. Dustjacket and card covers are heavily worn--partly worn through at the spine and fore-edges. A 1 1/2" tear to the DJ on the front panel. Front DJ flap is glued to the cover. There is creasing to cover and pages, and miscellaneous stains, but pages are mostly clean, though with fore-edge soil. First edition (no subsequent edition listed).

Reproductions of fair-copy manuscripts of vocal scores with a 2 piano accompaniment. 1: Overture (2 copies in plain wrappers, 7pp); 2: 2 arias, a duet and "Steam Organ Music with Chorus" (1 copy ringbound, 62pp); 3: "Introduzione ed aria" & "Scena" (as 1, 22pp); 4: 2 choruses and "Final Duet" (as 2, 45pp). With the composer's stamps to the wrappers of 1 and 3, with some corrections in red ink. Fantasy Fair "A contemporary legend", originally in three acts, was unstaged, concert extracts only were performed in London in 1953 (Andrew Plant, musicweb-international). Some staining to edges, some fading to some wrappers, some wear to edges, some rusty staples, binders.

A collection of poetry, including titles such as: Before the Sea, Secret Images, Request for the Day, Toward the City, and August Swallows, amongst others. Written by Randall Carline Swingler, an English poet, writing extensively in the 1930s in the communist interest. In the original paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with light sunning to the spine and small cracks to the joints at the head of the spine. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also very smart with light wear and sunning to the extremities. The odd small mark to the panels. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with scattered spotting throughout and light age toning to the endpapers. Very Good Indeed. book.

Randall Swingler (1909-1967) was an English poet whose works were primarily written in promotion of communism. He wrote a great deal of war poetry, and since his death has been seen as an important writer of communist English poetry.This work is a scarce novel written by a important figure in British communist literature. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart, cloth is a touch discoloured with minor wear otherwise. Internally firmly bound, pages are bright and clean.
