Its range is from the ninth to the sixteenth century, and it may be confidently asserted that so many splendid examples of the Illuminator's art, and so various in their excellence, have never before been showed in a single room.The present catalogue .contains eight plates which will recall to those who saw the exhibition the general appearance of the upright cases and the relative sizes of the books displayed in them; besides a hundred and fifty-four plates in which a hundred and sixty-five of the books and framed cuttings are reproduced. These are the work of Mr. Emery Walker, with the exception of Plates 60 and 87, which are photogravures by the Autotype Company. They are approximately of the scale of the originals except a very few plates in which the size of the volumes necessitated a reduction of scale. As often as possible the open book is shown, and not only an isolated page."
