Add to basket8 pp, 12mo. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'Dear Ernest'. He begins by congratulating Gye on his promotion and 'on going to Tangier - a delightful spot'. It is however 'very sad' that Gye's 'guiding hand over our destinies will no longer be there in the Office'. He thanks Gye for his 'kindness' and 'sympathy': 'My path has lain along uneventful ways and it has been an untold solace to feel you did not despise those who had mearly [sic] to 'stand & wait''. Gye will find Tangier ('the gateway to Morocco') a 'joy', and 'the light there & in the rest of Morocco - it varies a lot, will give your brush new elements with which to deal. It was interesting to watch its influence on the paintings of Bishop (Henry A.R.A.)' Gye will 'no doubt meet the weird but not untalented "Teddy Wolf" who seems to be less eccentric as an artist now than when first he came to Fez in 1928.' He finds Damascus 'curiously reminiscent of its offspring - Fez', and he finds it 'so little changed in ten years apart from the devastations of the Forces bombardment in 1925'. Ends by discussing accommodation. He 'can't bear Mrs. Hole's choice of a house', but hopes to change address. 'I feel strongly at the moment that H.M.G. ought to own all official houses'.

Thiébaud Bibliographie des ouvrages français sur la chasse 698. Schweiger Handbuch der classischen Bibliographie 218. Third French translation of Oppian's " ", the previous appeared in 1575 and 1690 respectively. This ancient poem on hunting was earlier attributed to the same Oppian, an ancient Greek writer from Cilicia, who wrote a poem on the fishermen called " ". Research has found that the present work has another author, probably from Apamea in Syria. His name is not known, but he is mostly referred to as Pseudo-Oppian or Oppian of Syria. The "Cynegetica" is written in the same form as "Halieutika", so the author was evidently familiar with that work. The time of its conception is uncertain, but probably it was written around 215 AD. The translator of the "Cynegetica", Jacques Nicolas Belin de Ballu (1753-1815), was a noted professor of ancient languages in Bordeaux and became an associate member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1787. He later emigrated to Russia and became professor of Greek in St. Petersburg. The second text, presented as "La grande histoire des animaux", is a translation of excerpts from "Hayat al-hayawan", commonly translated as "The Life of Animals" by the Cairo-based scholar Kamal al-Din Muhammad ibn Musa al-Damiri (1341-1405). The translation of al-Damiri is an early work by noted orientalist Antoine Isaac Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838). On the title page, Belin de Ballu is named as "conseiller a la cour des monnoies", a position which was also held by Silvestre de Sacy from 1781. The final extract from "Nouveaux mélanges de poésies grecques" contains the texts of "L'enlèvement d'Hélène" by Coluthus of Lycopolis and "La prise de Troye" by Tryphiodorus, both translated by Scipion Allut (-1786).

Add to basketFirst edition, first impression, of this scarce aide-mémoire compiled by the French High Commission for colonial administrators in its Syrian and Lebanese mandates. Copies appear in just eight institutions (five French) on WorldCat and in the Qatar National Library. The work opens with information on the costume, character, finances, and nomadic patterns of different peoples, followed by sections offering detailed discussion of tribes grouped into regions such as Damascus and its environs, Alleppo, Deir ez Zor, and the Djebel Druze. To assist French colonial officials, the work outlines the leadership and intertribal relations of each group, while the map depicts where tribes are expected to be in winter and summer according to their nomadic patterns. With the size of each tribe's name on the map corresponding to their importance, colonial officials could see at a glance how seasonal changes would impact French governance. The fluidity of nomadic movements across the boundaries of the mandate highlights the arbitrary and theoretical nature of colonial territory and borders and the extent to which French imperial authority was "illegitimate and thus unstable" (Khoury, p. 4). This copy is intriguingly inscribed on the front free endpaper in French, "De la part de votre tout dévoué Dictionnaire géographique, Beyrouth, 23-12-31, Clerris (?)" ("On behalf of your totally devoted Geographical Dictionary, Beirut, 23-12-31, Clerris (?)"), with another ownership inscription below. Philip Shukry Khoury, "Syria and the French Mandate: The Politics of Arab Nationalism, 1920-1945", 2014 (1987). Octavo (225 x 150 mm). Folding map (500 x 578 mm unfolded) in rear pocket. Contemporary black cloth-backed snakeskin boards. Rubbing and wear to extremities, small split at foot of front inner hinge professionally strengthened with adhesive, moderate foxing to top edge and contents, folding map toned with crease to bottom right corner slightly affecting printed area, map pocket well-preserved. A very good copy.
