In 1913, a somewhat unusual exhibition opened in the Art Salon on Bolshaya Dmitrovka Street in Moscow. Called "Icon Originals and Lubok Pictures", it was organized by a young but already well-known artist, Mikhail Larionov. The owner of a remarkable collection of folk pictures augmented from other private collections, he exhibited about 200 pictures of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: Russian, Japanese, Chinese, French, Jewish, Tatar and others. This comparative display of folk prints from various countries-unfortunately the first and only one in the history of art-showed that at a certain stage in the development of their cultures, the folk print flourished in most European and Eastern countries. It also became clear that the folk pictures, with all their national characteristics, distinctions of artistic style and similarities and differences of subject, had something profoundly and essentially in common. This something was the spirit of the people, the mode of thought and national world outlook. The folk pictures mirrored the aesthetic tastes of the people, their ideas of good and evil, and their moral and ethical standards. This is why no national culture can be fully understood without such a phenomenon as the folk print. The Russian folk picture is a very vivid art form. Many researchers have pointed to its originality and high aesthetic value. "Russian imagery contributes its own distinctive tonality and instrumentation to the great orchestra of popular creative art,"1 wrote Paul Duchartre. One of the first scholars to propagandize the Russian lubok in Western Europe, he attempted to introduce the Western reader to the remarkable world of the mighty Russian heroes, the fairytale princes and princesses, jesters, mummers, canny Russian muzhiks, enchantingly beautiful women, divine fools, monsters of the forests and the seas-in short, a world "redolent with the odours of the steppes and the Russian forest".In the last thirty years, the Russian folk picture has been more or less fully featured in various publications both at home and abroad. Virtually all of them are based on a classic work by Dmitry Rovinsky, an eminent art historian and authority on Russian culture. He travelled widely and familiarized himself with the folk pictures of nearly all the European and Eastern countries. His own collection consisted of over eight thousand Russian prints which he described in his major work, Russian Folk Pictures, published in 1881. Along with all the prints known to Rovinsky, this work also included an atlas of reproductions which are to this day indispensable to the study of the Russian lubok. What is the Russian folk picture, or lubok? When did it emerge and what is its history? The first mention of Russian folk pictures was made in the academic world over 160 years ago. In 1822, in the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature, a paper was read by a young scholar and antiquary named Ivan Snegiriov.
