Nous avons tenu à garder de cet échange avec Sam Szafran, qui eut lieu en 1999 dans son atelier, son caractère propre, sans rien modifier de son vocabulaire, de sa syntaxe, sans effacer ses écarts, ses excès, ou toute incorrection de ton, de style ou de grammaire. C?était là respecter lasingularité de l?artiste, en faire saisir…la complexité, entre raffinement et grossièreté, en faire réentendre la voix, et retrouver la cadence. Samy, le gamin des rues, était le familier des Halles avant leur destruction, quand elles étaient encore le repaire de la faune brutale des vendeurs, voleurs et prostituées. Petit à petit, lentement, il a élaboré une peinture à la sensibilité raffinée, d?une grande érudition. Le barbouilleur, ignorant tout de l?enseignement de sa pratique, deviendra l?un des plus grands peintres de son temps.Jean Clair.

From the edition limited to 200 numbered copies, with this one of 40 artist's copies on papier vélin d'Arches, signed by the author and the artist, with an additional suite of the etchings. Unique copy, illuminated by Szafran, with 9 etchings heightened in watercolor and a full watercolor composition covering the boards of the chemise. A graphic exploration of the serrated leaves of the Monstera deliciosa, a tropical plant native to the forests of southern Mexico. This motif, omnipresent in the work of Sam Szafran, first emerged in 1966, when he was living in the studio of Zao Wou-Ki: "Au printemps 1966, Jean-Paul Riopelle m'avait présenté Zao Wou-Ki et sa femme May, que j'adorais. Très gen-timent, ils m'ont prêté leur atelier pendant l'été, mais j'ai été absolument incapable d'y travailler : j'étais fasciné par un magnifique philodendron - rare à l'époque dans une maison - qui resplendissait sous la verrière, et qu'il m'était impossible de dessiner.
