The preface explains that "the following Illustrations of Old Shoes are intended to preserve in an intelligible form what is fast crumbling into dust; and it has been my endeavour to collect the very best and most authentic specimens, as well as to show the variety of shapes and the excellence of the workmanship and design used by our ancestors." The first work shows a variety of shoes, beginning with one owned by Mary, Queen of Scots, and has four appendices of historical information about shoes. The Supplement includes four additional color plates of historical shoes in Greig's collection, and two black and white plates with sketches of Roman shoes.
