L auteur se propose comme un but essentiel de donner un tableau aussi circonstancié que possible de la vie et de l uvre du premier empereur français, sa caractéristique comme homme, comme personnage historique, avec son génie, sa nature, ses aspirations. J ai taché de traiter d une façon parfaitement objective cette personnalité aussi vaste que complexe et que je me suis intéressés non pas seulement ( et non pas tant) aux motifs de ses actes qu à leur signification historique.
