Don Higginbotham (May 22, 1931 - June 22, 2008) was an American historian and Dowd Professor of History at the University of North Carolina. A leading scholar of George Washington, he was a pioneering practitioner of the "new" military history and an expert on colonial and revolutionary America and the early national United States. He served twice (1975-76 and 1998-99) as visiting professor of history at the United States Military Academy. Kenneth Nebenzahl lectures and writes in the fields of early mapping, exploration and American history. Nebenzahl served many years as a consultant to Rand McNally & Co., the Hudson's Bay Company and The Library of Congress. As an aid to the modern day reader, each of the maps is accompanied by some 300 words of commentary by Nebenzahl. These 'captions' help interprets the action depicted, explain the origin of the maps, and the significance of the engagement, as the situation warrants. Higginbotham contributes a 40,000 word essay on the background of the war. Higginbotham's text could stand as a worthy book on its own. As it is, much of the understanding of the how and why of the events mapped springs from this well-written commentary. Maps were to the Revolutionary War what television was to the Vietnam War and this atlas includes 54 battle maps reproduced in full color along with an accompanying commentary by Don Higginbotham tracing the events of the successive actions. This Atlas is the most unusual and comprehensive of its kind. It is truly a unique effort, telling the story of the American battle for independence with the help of priceless maps, many of which had not been reproduced since their original appearance over 200 years ago. Drawn by actual eye-witnesses to the events described, the maps capture the immediacy and excitement of the moment. The 54 maps are reproduced in full color with a remarkable degree of detail. Four maps present the theaters of the War. Accompanying each map is a clearly written commentary describing the events portrayed.
