2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with Stewart's seal in red wax, to 'Mr. Knobel | Wine Merchant | South Audley Street'. He asks Knobel to 'send a person & a Hamper to pack up three dozen of wine & ale left at the Major General's for the Country, as before'. He a…sks for the hamper to be sent, 'so packed & sealed, together with 3 dozen hamper of His, (Mr. Knobel's) best Port ready for immediate drinking by the Hoy to Woodbridge in Suffolk, as last winter'. He concludes by complaining that, while the 'last Port sent was old & good', it had 'too much sediment for carriage, or for immediate use'. Years of speculation about Warburton's fate came to an end in 2002, when his remains were found with his aircraft, buried about 2 yards deep in a field near the Bavarian villa…ge of Egling an der Paar, 34 miles west of Munich. According to witnesses, the aircraft fell there on 12 April 1944, around 11:45. One of the propellers had bullet holes in it, which suggests that Warburton had been shot down. This is an extremely scarce item, not held by the Imperial War Museum, and significant for the five-page eye-witness account it contains (pp.29-33): ''H.M.S. "Ardent" and the Jutland Action. / By A. M.', i.e. Lieutenant-Commander Arthur Marsden, who was in command of the Ardent and one of only two survivors of its sinking. It is… remarkable that he was allowed to disseminate such a candid account (for the perusal of naval cadets!) within months of the engagement. On cover: 'The Britannia Magazine / Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. / Christmas, 1916.' and printers' slug. 4to, 36pp and further three plates. On shiny paper and in brown printed wraps. Staples rusted and some leaves loose; some staining and wear, but in fair condition for such a frail survival. Containing - after list of officers, masters and cadets - editorial and 'chapel' notes, correspondence, articles, cartoons, reports of 'Soccer' and 'Rugger', 'Beagling Notes'. But it is Marsden's account that is of significance. Two extracts will convey the tone: 'The enemy ships suddenly switched off lights and "ceased fire." I could feel the ship was sinking, and said so to my 1st Lieutenant (Lieut. C. E. F. Egan) who was also on the bridge, and told him to get out the boats and rafts, or what might be left of them. I tried to get down the starboard bridge ladder, but that was shot away. The port one was hanging by a shred, and I slid down that. The Leading Telegraphist came up to me in the quietest and most matter-of-fact way and asked if he should make any report. I told him what to make, and he saluted, disappeared, and I never saw him again. The Leading Signalman came up and said in the most cheerful way, "Well, the old Argent done her bit all right, Sir." The ship was nearly gone; so it remained for us to try and save as many of the crew as possible.' And: 'I spoke to many men, and saw most of them die one by one. Not a man of them showed any fear of death, and there was never a murmur, complaint, or cry for help from a single soul. Their joy was, andn they talked about it to the end, that they and the Ardent had "done their bit," as they put it. While there were still many alive, a German came close and fired a star-shell over us. I could see her distinctly and was all for giving her a hail, but the men all said "No"; they agreed that they would sooner take the remote chance of beig saved by an English ship rather than be a prisoner in Germany. I was nearly done in once or twice in the first hour by men hanging on to me in the last stages of exhaustion and I was separated from my lifebuoy and was pulled right over in the water, but managed to recover myself and the buoy. None of the men seemed to suffer at all; they just seemed to lay back and go to sleep.'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Perforated at right edge, and headed 'This half should be retained by Parent or Guardian.' (The absent 'fly leaf' was to be 'returned to the Commanding Officer not later than the 6th April, with the answers filled in, giving the fullest information.') The first part o…f the memorandum is mainly concerned with railway arrangements for those travelling to Scotland, Ireland, London, Bristol, Plymouth, Exeter. 'Cadets will be provided with Army Form W3504, which will enable them to travel 1st Class at less than the ordinary 3rd class fare now prevailing. | The Fleet Paymaster of the College will defray all travelling expenses, which will subsequently be charged against the Cadet's personal account.' The latter part of the memorandum refers to bans on 'parcels of eatables of any kind' and smoking (which is 'against the regulations of the Navy until the age of 18') and 'special medicines'. The memorandum concludes: 'To avoid Cadets wearing underclothing of insufficient warmth it is requested Parents will only send back with them underclothing suitable for the time of year. | As regards pocket money, the recognised sum of £1 on return from leave is considered amply sufficient for all ordinary requirements. Should Parents consider it necessary to send more, they are asked to impress on the Cadet that the money should be lodged at once in the Cadet Bank, whence it can be readily withdrawn under the Cadet Bank regulations.' Sir Richard Harington, 12th Baronet (1861-1931), Puisne Judge in India, and High Sheriff of Herefordshire. No other copy traced (unsurprisingly).

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst and only edition. This is a remarkably rich and extensive archive of official documents relating to preparation for the State Funeral of Sir Winston Churchill, Saturday, 30th January, 1965. While we have handled numerous planning documents from the days leading up to Churchill's elaborate State Funeral, we have not previou…sly encountered anything quite so extensive in the way of official planning documents. All of the documents and mementos reside within an enormous, canvas-bound, two-ring binder comprising an incredibly detailed document "Copy No. 323" of the indexed and tabbed "Special District Order By Major-General E. J. B. Nelson, General Officer Commanding London District and Major-General Commanding The Household Brigade". This enormous document measures 13.5 x 8.75 inches, is nearly 1.5 inches thick, and features 16 separate, purple-tabbed sections, these sections teeming with details about every aspect of the public ceremonies, and terminating in 15 maps. The separate but related documents laid in are also extensive. These include: Amendments 2-5 to the Special District Order; the official and confidential list of Operation Hope Not Telephone Numbers; a confidential summary document for the Operation Hope Not; a State Funeral Warning Order and accompanying large, folding, tabular detail of "Troops Taking Part in the Procession".An ink-stamp at the head of the Operation Hope Not Telephone Numbers document states "HEADQUARTERS 19 INF BDE GP". Our presumption is that this indicates that this binder and the documents therein belonged to a senior military officer participating in the State Funeral.Perhaps most poignant, also laid in is an original black crepe sewn and lined arm band for participation in the State Funeral ceremonies ostensibly the one worn during the Funeral by the participating military officer to whom these documents belonged.Of course, the document is primary source history of one of the twentieth century's most elaborate memorial services for one of its greatest public figures. Beyond historical significance, the overall effect of this mammoth trove of documents is to convey, by sheer volume of detail, the mammoth organizational scope of official public mourning for Winston Churchill. On Sunday, 24 January 1965, Winston Churchill died at the age of 90. By the time of his death, he had become "a living national memorial" of the time he had lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he had served. His death completed his transformation into a national icon. The day after Churchill died, on25 January, the Queen sent a message to Parliament announcing: "Confident in the support of Parliament for the due acknowledgement of our debt of gratitude and in thanksgiving for the life and example of a national hero" and concluded "I have directed that Sir Winston's body shall lie in State in Westminster Hall and that thereafter the funeral service shall be held in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul." This was in accord with longstanding plans; twelve years before, in 1953, at the direction of Queen Elizabeth II, planning for Churchill's eventual state funeral had begun. The elaborate plans came to be called Operation Hope Not.Churchill's full state funeral at the Cathedral of St. Paul in London was attended by the Queen herself, other members of the royal family, the Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, and representatives of 112 countries.Churchill was interred in St. Martin's churchyard, Bladon, Oxfordshire. It was the first time in a century that a British monarch attended a commoner's funeral. The outpouring of national and international sorrow and regard - from friends and foes, sympathizers and opponents alike - was both remarkable and effusive. Before the service in St. Paul's Cathedral, Churchill's coffin had passed through the countryside on a train. The Oxford don, Dr. A. L. Rowse, recorded "The Western sky filled with the lurid glow of winter sunset; the sun setting on the British Empire.".
