He was surly a first-generation Jewish immigrant, likely arriving during the massive waves of migration from Eastern Europe between 1890 and 1910. Surely his name was not Edward Frank White when he got off the boat. Maybe his last name was "Weiss", which is German and Yiddish for "White." In the mugshots his eyes are shut. This was either a deliberate tactic or a symptom of his physical condition. The text notes his "twitching eyes" and a "nervous disposition." In the 1930s, police cameras used intense, bright flash powder or early high-wattage incandescent bulbs. For someone with a severe, involuntary nervous twitch (blepharospasm), the blinding flash would trigger a powerful, immediate spasm, causing them to shut their eyes at the moment the shutter clicked. But it was also common for seasoned criminals to intentionally blink, grimace, or look down to distort their features and ruin the mugshot, making it harder for the public to recognize them from a flyer. Sometimes the police used spoiled photos because developing film took time and, also, police departments couldn't afford to waste multiple plates of film . .…

Memories of My Youth was the first solo art exhibition by Winfred Rembert, on display at Adelson Galleries in New York City from April 7 to May 28, 2010. Winfred Rembert (1945-2021) was a Civil Rights activist who spent seven years on a chain gang and survived a lynching after participating in a march in the 1960s. He was a prolific lifelong artist, using hand tools and dye to create art on leather canvases. Rembert's posthumous memoir, Chasing Me to My Grave, received the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Biography.
