On 9.5 x 4 cm slip of wove paper, presumably the valediction cut from a letter. In good condition, lightly aged, with the reverse bearing a thin strip of grey paper from mount along thin strip at head. Reads: 'John Hope / M. Genl. Commdg / in N. B.' See image.…

The letter must have been written in 1855, as Fox Maule (later Earl of Dalhousie) was appointed Secretary of State for War on 8 February of that year, and Napier died on 16 September. 4pp, 16mo. Bifolium with black border. Loss to part of second leaf caused by removal from mount, resulting in loss of a few words of text, otherwise in good condition. Begins: 'In consequence of a letter from my Son William of your regt. [i.e. the King's Own Scottish Borderers] stating your wish to be appointed a Paymaster to the Out Pensioners, I wrote to my friend Mr Fox Maule the Secy. at War, & herewith give you the answer which I am sorry to say holds out but little prospect of success'. He proceeds to transcribe Fox Maule's letter, dated 'War Office | 8th. July', adding: 'You had better not depend much upon this, but use all other interest you may have in that quarter, as the more Irons [y]ou have in the fire the [bette]r!' He concludes 'Lady Napier [jo]ins me in best compliments to Mrs. Hamilton'. In a postscript he asks for Hamilton to give the Napiers' best regards to a 'friend', whose name has been torn away, 'at Chatham'. Napier's son Major-General William Craig Emilius Napier (1818-1903) would end his career as Governor of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.…

Condition: Fine. June 28, 1854., 1854. Fine. - Over 75 words penned on three sides of 7 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide stationery with an attached leaf. A crest with the letter R beneath a crown is embossed in blue at the top for the first page. Field Marshal FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan writes to a "Mr. Fullom[?]" expressing his vexation that the recipient was unable to receive his pension "I cannot tell you how vexed I am that Lord Derby's Govt should have gone out, without having been able to bestow upon you the pension which you so richly deserved." He states that they should hope that the government will soon be restored so that "then your claims will receive their due." Signed "Raglan". Folded several times, else fine. The British Military Officer Field Marshall FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Lord Raglan (1788-1855) served in the Peninsular War and subsequently as Military Secretary to the Duke of Wellington during the Waterloo Campaign. He served as a Tory member of Parliament for Truro and then as Master-General of Ordnance. In 1854, he commanded the British troops sent to Crimea to defend Constantinople and to besiege the Russian port of Sevastopol. Though he was successful at the Battle of the Alma, his failure to clearly transmit orders resulted in the disastrous "Charge of the Light Brigade" during the Battle of Balaclava. Though he had success at the Battle of Inkerman, he suffered from dysentery and depression following his failure at the allied assault on Sevastopol and died within the month.…

Flexney | Westborne Place | Bayswater | near London', with two postmarks in red ink, one round and the other oval (the second in two parts), both giving year 1818. Docketed and with the following note above the text of the letter: 'From Lieut Col George Napier | To Mr. Danl. Flexney, written with his left hand after the loss of his right Arm in battle in the Peninsular.' The letter reads: 'Sir, | I take the liberty of asking you if by chance any box or parcel was left at your house, in which papers might be put, as I have lost some Bonds, or mislaid them. I had them before I left Bays Water, but where I put them or what is become of them I am quite ignorant, & merely write in case you may recollect my ever having mentioned them to you; I am glad to hear Mrs. Flexney is better & sincerely wishing her a good recovery I | remain Sir | Your Obedt. Servt. | Geo. Napier'.…

He receives the briefest of obituaries in the Gentleman's Magazine, July 1840: 'May 10. At Exeter, aged 81, Col. Thomas Abernethie, K.H. on the retired list of the Royal Marines.' 3pp, 4to. Bifolium. On aged and discoloured paper, with the usual damage to the second leaf from the breaking of the seal. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with postmark, to 'Messrs Cox & Son / 20 Bartletts Buildings / Holborn / London'. Signed 'Thos. Abernethie' and docketed 'Maj: Abernethie / 16 March 1811'. Begins: 'Gentlemen / I have requested a Cap. Falcon of the Navy to purchase for me a Qr cask of Madeira - should he [?] and to draw upon you per the Amt. which you will please to honor -'. He continues: 'Lord Wellington is in full pursuit of the French - but I scarcely think he will follow them further than the confines of Portugal - should they escape thither - we have no certain intelligence of the Armies till we receive it in an official shape from England - Cap. Cox is well - we rode together yesterday to see the palace of Queluse [sic] about 8 miles from Lisbon - a very charming spot -'.…

On two bifoliums of paper with Gater watermark dated 1827. In good condition, on aged paper. Begins: 'In the Eastern country there was a King of the race of Sun called Annasockkaynathan [oriental characters here] the name of whose wife was Manonmasunthary [oriental characters here] who was delivered of a wonderful child who was born with teeth, and dressed him togehter with breasts (full grown) at which the King was astonished and sent to the wise men enquiring of the miraculous birth of the child'. Two: 'Story of Manderapaudey'. 6pp., foolscap 8vo. In poor condition, heavily worn with loss of text. Begins: 'In a City called Vecroomakasum, there lived a Bramany, who had an only daughter, who was a beautiful and accomplished young woman; her Father intended to bestow her hand on a young man, who was in every manner able to support her, and who was well informed, and had Received a proper education'. Three: 'The History of Santiraksen'. 22pp., foolscap 8vo. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Begins: 'A certain king who reigned over a realm called Kalatasem, was long since without having an Issue, and in Consequence his wife brought forth a child, the prognosticators have prognosticated, that child has been unfortunate to the Parent, and admonished the king to transport the same otherwise the Parent and all other relations will die in a six months'. Four: Headed: 'the craft first | of making two intimates to alienate'. 16pp., foolscap 8vo. Ends abruptly on p.16, with catch word, and clearly the first part only. Written in a closer hand than the other items, presumably at a later date. Begins: 'In a city called was a merchant man Named Vartaman who has thought to peregrinate and merchandize, so he has loaded his merchandizing upon a cart and coupled to it, two oxen'. One of the great figures in world history. See his entries in Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Oxford DNB. On one side of piece of laid paper rougly 11 cm squarer, with partial watermark 'J G'. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, with traces of mount on blank reverse. Folded twice. Reads: 'London March 7 1842 / F M The Duke of Wellington presents his Compliments to Miss Busby / Not being resident at Oxford he has no Controul [sic] over any matter relating to the Bodleian Library. / Miss Busby should apply to the Vice Chancellor. -' The identity of the actual writer of the letter has been questioned in pencil at the foot of page with 'Qy Secy' (i.e. 'Query? Secretary'), and the doubt does not seem unjustified. It may well be that this item is in the Duke's hand - the writing certainly has his characteristic slope - but although it is superficially similar, there are several elements in the calligraphy that raise a strong doubt: the 'L' and 'M' of the date 'London March'; all four initials in 'F M The Duke', the fact that the second 'l' in 'Wellington' is looped, and in particular the fact that the 'r' in 'resident' and 'n' in 'no' begin below the line of writing, which is not a characteristic observed in the Duke's writing at any period.
