"This was a war of Afghan aggression; the British invasion followed a series of Afghan incursions on to British territory, and the subsequent British counter-invasion was limited to an advance of some thirteen miles. For the British it was a wholly unexpected war" (Robson, p. 11). British air power was at the heart of the conflict, although the planes used are described here as "obsolete and worn out. Their climbing power was low, and this led to their being shot at from the hill tops as they passed along the valleys. [Yet] their moral effect was undoubtedly great" (p. 133). The RAF bombed Kabul and Jalalabad, operating out of modern-day Pakistan and traversing high mountain ranges. Wilber, Annotated Bibliography of Afghanistan, 636.
