An attractive first edition of cartographer John Carey's detailed and important survey of the roads of England, Scotland and Wales as they were in the late 18th century. A first edition. In 1794 Cary was commissioned by the Postmaster General to survey England's roads, which resulted in in this work, produced under the direction and inspection of Thomas Hasker. With names of the inns which will supply horses, and lists of country seats. With an engraved title page and dedication leaf. Illustrated with a hand coloured folding map. There are major losses to this folding map, and a complete facsimile reproduction of the map is bound in. ESTC T133710 Rebacked, retaining original boards, with endpapers renewed. With an advertisement leaf to the rear. With the bookplate of William Lloyd loosely inserted. Cary was a prominent English cartographer who produced Ordnance Survey map, and collaborated on geological maps with William Smith. Rebacked, in a half calf binding, retaining the original half calf paper covered boards. Externally, excellent, with rubbing to boards. Endpapers renewed. Internally, firmly bound. Major losses to folding map. A facsimile of the complete folding map is bound in. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd spot and handling mark. Very Good. book.
