Twenty Third | 1830 - | Willm. Barth Esq | Yarmouth | Norfolk | T W Coke'. Manuscript note at foot in another nineteenth-century hand: 'Mr. Coke, M.P. of Holkham Norfolk - afterwards 1st. An amusing communication reading: 'My dear ir | I have no more idea than he man in the Moon to whom your letter refers - No Enigma or Delphic Oracle could be more mysterious - Who Mr Smith is - to which of ye Classes of Animals he belong - from whence he came & whither he is gone I know not | In which class of animals y are to be numbered I well know or you are certainly an Odd Fis | Do throw a litt light into my puzzled brain & bieve me always most truly yours | [signed] Astley Cooper'.

An important Association copy with Title-page inscribed by Elizabeth de Saumarez, daughter of Admiral Saumarez, one of Nelson's "Band of Brothers". In addition bound in after the Title-page is a fascinating double-page letter from the Dedicatee Lieutenant Colonel George Keppel to the author, suggesting a quote to be placed under the frontispiece print of Keppel by Reynolds. xvi + 446pps. + vi. + 438pps. Marbled foredges. Some slight occasional foxing but a Stunning copy overall.

De Grey begins: 'You have very much obliged me by accepting a small Present of Game, and many of my neighbours as well as myself will rejoyce in your Correspondent supplying me with a pipe of Port and a Hogshead of Calcavalla, [sic] if a Hogshead of Sherry could be procured without any additional trouble, it would add to the Obligation'. If the wines 'cannot be assign'd to Mr Merchant at Lynn, they must be sent from the Port of London by Archers Newmarket Waggon, and left at Hilborough: Mr Chamberlayne of Downing Street will immediately discharge your Correspondents Demands.' The letter concludes with the usual formal flourish.
