Le livre est composé de la couverture, la page de titre et de 25 feuillets noirs ou blancs de tailles différentes, certains ajourés, formant par superposition ou juxtaposition les vingt-six lettres de l'alphabet. Tirage non précisé, celui-ci portant le tampon de l'artiste en titre et sur l'emboîtage. ------ Thomas Ockerse est né en Indes néerlandaises en 1940. Il s'installe avec sa famille en 1957 aux Etats-Unis où il étudie à l'université d'état d'Ohio, puis à Yale en 1965. Il devient en 1967 enseignant à l'Université d'Indiana, puis à la Rhode Island School of Design dont il dirige à partir de 1971 le département graphisme. Ockerse est à l'initiative du programme de Master of Fine Art du RISD jusqu'en 2004. En marge de son travail universitaire Ockerse développe des recherches personnelles, s'intéressant particulièrement à la poésie concrète. C'est en 1964, durant ses étude à Yale qu'il conçoit THE A-Z BOOK. En 1969, le MoMA souhaite le publier mais devant le coût et la difficulté de fabrication, le musée renonce. Françoise Boas qui dirige alors Color-craft Lithographers Inc. et qui avait fait le devis pour le Moma reprend le projet à son compte, prévoyant un tirage à 2000 exemplaires. Mais là encore le montage de l'ouvrage demandait un tel temps de travail que peu d'exemplaires furent assemblés. A la fermeture de l'imprimerie en 1974, l'artiste récupère les invendus, environs sept cents exemplaires dont un bon nombre endommagés, et il détruit les pages isolées. Il en vend alors lui-même un peu, revêtus du tampon Tom Ockerse editions. THE A-Z BOOK est à l'image des recherches artistiques de Tom Ockerse, et de sa participation à Fluxus. Elles sont stimulées par ses expériences de poésie visuelle, ce qu'il appelait «les équations des mots et des images». Bien qu'abécédaire, son livre s'inscrit par son jeu combinatoire de transformations typographique dans la lignée des livres d'artiste, exemple parfait du Concrete Book, terme Ockerse inventât pour son cours " Le Livre comme expérience nécessaire" à la RISD.

His interest in book arts and concrete poetry, what he referred to as "word and image equations" developed when he was an assistant professor at Indiana University (1967-71). This book was produced at that time and explores the alphabet through a series of die-cut pages in overlays in black and white. Cardboard shell-case has some rubbing to corners and light soiling, else very good. The spiral-bound book is near fine. Library of Congress catalog card laid in 11" x 11" and 26 unpaginated pages. 4to.
