The inspiration of the sailing ship for the artist, manifest in the great marine paintings of four hundred years, is part of the adventure too. So are the excitement and love inspired by the sailing ship in ordinary people, which created the demand for innumerable simple prints of ships throughout the age of sail. Captain Donald Macintyre has written a historical record of four centuries, from the first circumnavigation of the world to the virtual disappearance of the square~rigged ship. This is followed by a selection of contemporary writings of many nations, from 1520 to 1914 ( Francisco Antonio Pigafetta, William Bourne, Sir Francis Drake the Younger, Don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, Gerrit de Veer, Willem Cornelison Schouten, Thomas Heywood, A. Richer, George Lord Anson, Louis de Bougainville, Captain James Cook, Horatio Viscount Nelson, Captain Isaac Hull USN, Richard Dana, Captain H. A. Chippendale USN, Basil Lubbock, Basil Greenhill CBE, Joseph Conrad, etc.), each piece showing an important aspect of the age of sail, the whole combining with over three hundred beautiful illustrations to give a comprehensive picture of the sailing ship experience. Captain Macintyre traces the development of sails, rigging and hull design, from the caravel, carrack and galleon to the clipper epoch, when the sailing ship became a thing of visual and functional perfection; and beyond to the autumn of the age of sail, to the great steel~hulled four and five~masted barques and barquentines, which had a strange beauty of their own.' He tells the story of maritime exploration and the establishment of commerce : a story of friendly or hostile competition among nations sharing the common experience of the struggle against the sea. Adventure, in the ordinary sense of dramatic and exciting episodes, fills the history of sail and has received an extraordinary amount of eyewitness documentation. The selection of contemporary documents in this volume unfolds a stirring tale of storms, shipwrecks and fights, of famous ships and the men who sailed in them. It shows, as nothing else can, what life in sailing ships was really like. It relives great moments of discovery or despair, such as the first rounding of Cape Horn, or the last voyage of Willem Barents in his brave and futile search for the Northeast Passage, ennobled by the courage and dignity of a crew lost among ice and polar bears in the dark, dreaded Arctic winter. It evokes the brutality of life at sea, but also its warmer, more humorous side. After the horrors of Anson's voyage it is a relief to read of Bougainville's reception at Tahiti and the meeting of Cook's sailors with the nymphs of Nootka Sound. The odyssey of the human spirit is ever present in The Adventure of Sail, from the perceptive introduction by the famous modern sailing man and boat designer, Uffa Fox, to the highly.

Fine condition faux red leather boards with elaborately illustrated gold front cover perimeter and spine decorations, gold front cover lettering, and gold spine lettering over a black block border. Includes Editor's Comment and Acknowledgments. Major chapter headings are as follows: Wisdom; Benjamin F…ranklin; History; Beauty and Business. "Sometimes it seems almost futile to try to write anything new because it has all been said before - and so well said. Of course, any such defeatism must lead to a dead end of accomplishment in terms of literary effort. Fortunately for the living and those to come, there are many bright new stars on the panel of contemporary writers. They are skillfully telling the story of these eventful days and their words will be read with relish by future generations. In fact, the printed word today is so prolific, and the competition with the book, the magazine and the newspaper is so great, future generations will require anthologies in great number to know what our bright literary stars have said. In this anthology there has bee no effort to be erudite, consistent, unusual or educational. The prime purpose is to amuse by exposing the reader to many things he has read before and may wish to read again. Perhaps that poem he [or she] HAD to learn, to pass freshman English, is here. He may even enjoy rereading it under different auspices. It is not possible to include only those things that appeal to him. If he dislikes poetry in any form, we hope he will please forgive us. Some of us like the "well-turned couplet." On the other hand, there are those who love Shakespeare, but just cannot understand how his hallowed words should appear with some of the more commonplace choices that have arrived in this selection. It takes all kinds you know - and we have tried to select all kinds of literature." - excerpt from Editor's Comment.

Trials of noted sea captains, including of pirate Captain Kidd, Captain Richard Kirkby and pirate Captain Thomas Green. Captain William Kidd (c.1654 1701) was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy, although some modern historians note tha…t relegating him to the role of pirate and putting him on trial was a maneuver used by politicians of the day to deflect attention from their own questionable roles in privateering. Here Kidd testifies that he has French passes, which would have provided proof that he worked as a privateer and not a pirate: "I beg your Lordship's Patience till I can procure my Papers. I had a Couple of French Passes, which I must make use of in order to my Justification" (p287). Kidd was not allowed to retrieve his papers; he was found guilty on all charges (murder and piracy) and sentenced to death. (pp 287-338) Captain Richard Kirkby (1658 16 April 1703) was an officer of the Royal Navy who was tried at a court martial for his conduct during the Action of August 1702, a naval battle in the War of the Spanish Succession, in which a British squadron fought the French off the coast of present day Colombia, South America. Kirkby, who wrote to the Admiralty and claimed that the defeat was in fact caused by Vice Admiral Benbow's errors in judgment, was convicted of cowardice and disobedience and sentenced to be shot. (pp 445-448). Captain Thomas Green (1679?-1705) was an English sailor and alleged pirate, who was accused of having boarded a ship off the coast of India, seized its goods, killed the crew and sold the ship. The evidence against Capt. Green was insufficient, however he was found guilty and hanged in Scotland along with 2 crew members. (pp 592-608) Volume 5 of a 6 volume set. Folio, 852pp. Deaccessed by the NY Association of the Bar Library, with their stamp on the title page. Pale green library cloth binding with leather gilt spine labels, and paper label. The cost of the transaction was $15,000,000, around $18 per square mile. Control of the entire area was taken over by the United States, including large areas of the country which was inhabited - and managed - by Native Americans, who had never themselves ceded the land. Following the Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned an expedition to explore the territory and report back in as much detail as possible. A primary aim was to find a new travel route across the country, ensuring an American presence in the area before other colonial powers took advantage of the area and tried to establish their own footholds. The Lewis and Clark Expedition - alternatively known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition - set out from Camp Dubois on the 14th May 1804, crossing the Continental Divide, eventually reaching St. Louis, Missouri, in 1806. They were famously assisted in interpretation and interactions with local tribes by Sacagawea, a Lemni Shoshone woman who accompanied the expedition. The Lewis and Clark Expedition introduced the United States government to various Native American tribes and how trade with them could be promoted, alongside advising on the viability of the path they followed. Various botanical and zoological specimens were returned to the East Coast, including corn, or maize, grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. It took nearly 10 years for Lewis and Clark to publish their journals, first in Philadelphia in octavo format in 1814 as History of the Expedition under the Command of Captain Lewis and Clark, to the Sources of the Missouri, thence across the Rocky Mountains and down the River Colombia to the Pacific Ocean. Here we find the first British edition, including Neele's highly important folding map, showing the expedition route.

Add to basketHalf Leather. Condition: Good. [Lacking all the folding maps and charts]. Six volumes, octavo, pp 2242, (4), generally age-toned throughout, lacking most of page 1445/6, a cracked hinge with weakness in volume two, a few pages lacking small marginal pieces, but otherwise surprisingly sound throughout, with 126 (of 129 ?) engrave…d plates, three plates repaired (one with slight loss), bound in a very simple and unsophiticated half calf and marbled boards, rather dull, the spines un-lettered apart from numerals, chipped and with slight loss. The binding is a little tight, and whereas the text is easily read, the titles of some plates are hidden, though there is a binding list with titles at the rear of the last volume. Despite some condition faults this a curiously satisfying and unassuming set.

Add to basketFirst and only edition of an account of the taking of the Mayflower, a royalist privateer vessel belonging to Captain Polhill, Admiral of Falmouth, by the parliamentarian Captain William Thomas of the 8th Whelp. This happened during the English Civil War, a conflict over the manner of England's government, in which the supporter…s of King Charles I stood against the supporters of Oliver Cromwell and the Long Parliament.Thomas was ordered to escort some trading vessels to Morlaix in Brittany. When he learned that the prize ship Mayflower, recently taken from Yarmouth, was lying at that harbour, he disguised his vessel as a merchant ship to lure Polhill out. Polhill was fooled, and made haste to capture the reported merchantman "laden with wool and iron". Thomas chased the Mayflower and forced it to run aground. Eventually the captain escaped and remaining crew surrendered and came over to Thomas's side.Robert Riviere (1808-1882) established his famous bindery in Bath and moved it to London in 1840, gaining a reputation as one of England's best binders for the quality of his materials and workmanship. He signed his bindings "Bound by Riviere" from 1860 to 1880.With the pencilled initials "W.H. C-M." and the date "12 Oct. 1882", that is Wakefield Christie-Miller (1835-1898), who later inherited the Britwell Library. Some minor spots and smudges along the extremities, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding fine.l ESTC R16776; M.J. Add to basketLeather Bound. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 31 p.; 70 p. 21 cm. Quarter leather with marbled boards. Spine label reads "Tracts." Rebound with new endpapers. Spine worn and boards rubbed. . Reverse of p. 31 in first tract is noticeably dark, and the leaves of this section bear more thumbing and staining than the rest of the… text, which is only darkened on the first and last pages. The first tract is also shorter than the rest of the text block and bound slightly askew, but cut with the rest of the pages, and there is a tear in the centre of the block at the spine from the thread of its original binding. A few typos are corrected by hand in the first document. Williams' narrative, the second document, has lost its half-title and title-page. Title continues: "Captain William's Narrative; in which is contained particulars relative to the execution of Mustapha Cawn; and observations on the speeches of General Burgoyne, Colonel Fullarton, Mr. Fox, Mr. Burke, and, Mr. Francis; addressed to The Officers of the British Army." This volume contains two related books. The first letter pertains to Pitt's India Act of 1784. The second is by Captain Williams, who put Mustapha Cawn to death without a trial, exactly the type of behaviour Pitt was trying to overcome with legislation in the British Parliament. The resulting Narrative is Williams' defense of his actions.
