He is now regarded as an important founding figure in the scholarly study of the history of philosophy. His views were eclectic, and were taken up by his son Christian Thomasius. He was influential in the contemporary realignment of philosophy as a discipline. He wrote on a wide range of topics, including plagiarism and the education of women. He was the teacher of Gottfried Leibniz at the University of Leipzig, where Thomasius was professor of Rhetoric and Moral Philosophy, remaining a friend and correspondent, and has been described as Leibniz s mentor. Georg Casper Kirchmaier (1635 in Uffenheim, Franken, Germany 1700 in Wittenberg, Germany) was a German montanist & naturalist. Er disputierte gegen Georg Lani und stand im Briefwechsel mit Spener und Leibniz. Die Ausgabe enthält Schriften aus allen Bereichen seines Schaffens, von Lehrbüchern über akademische Reden bis zu Werken über Metaphysik sowie theoretische und praktische Philosophie. Anders als sein berühmterer Sohn Christian und als sein Schüler G. W. Leibniz gehört der Leipziger Professor für Moral, Dialektik und Rhetorik Jacob Thomasius noch der aristotelischen Schulphilosophie an; dies belegen, neben seinen Publikationen zu allen Disziplinen einschließlich der Metaphysik, sein Kommentar zu D. Stahl, aber auch seine frühe Auseinandersetzung mit Spinoza. Zugleich verkörpert Thomasius das allmählich erwachende (auch wieder auf Melanchthon rekurrierende) Bewußtsein dafür, daß der ontologische Anspruch des Aristotelismus nicht (mehr) einzulösen war. An dessen Stelle traten das didaktisch reduzierte Lexikon philosophischer Begriffe einerseits (neben seiner Professur hatte Thomasius die Rektorate der Leipziger Gymnasien inne) und die polyhistorische Ordnung, auch vorsichtig eklektische Distanzierung der philosophischen Tradition andererseits; auch die neue Physik erfährt positive Resonanz.
