L'ensemble est réuni par un cordon rouge, recouvert d'un papier d'attente titré "Bréviaire du chercheur de champignons". Le manuscrit est complet et se termine par la table des matières. La page de titre semble indiquer que des planches en couleurs avaient été prévues pour illustrer l'ouvrage mais l'auteur semble n'avoir jamais exécuté ou fait exécuter des dessins qui ne figurent pas, de ce fait, dans le présent manuscrit. La bibliothèque municipale de Lyon de La Part-Dieu possède cinq imprimés évoquant un long et pénible conflit entre l'évêque du petit diocèse languedocien de Saint-Pons-de-Thomières et les récollets entre 1…694 et 1697. Ils concernent une opposition violente entre le prélat et les religieux à propos de la distribution des sacrements, en particulier de la confession, mais aussi plus largement de la gestion du diocèse. Ils émanent tous de François Percin de Montgaillard, évêque de Saint-Pons de1664 à sa mort en 1713.Connu pour ses sympathies jansénistes (il se déclare au côté des quatre évêques réfractaires à la signature du Formulaire en 1667), c'est un prélat batailleur qui n'hésite pas à affronter successivement son confrère de Toulon au sujet du Rituel d'Alet ou Fénelon sur l'infaillibilité de l'Église. Ses amis sont jansénistes ou jansénisants: Grimaldi, archevêque d'Aix-en-Provence (1655-1685), François de Grignan à Arles (1644-1689), Caulet à Pamiers (1644-1680), Pavillon à Alet (1637-1677), mais aussi Montchal à Toulouse, Gondrin à Sens, etc. Les récollets, de leur côté, ont publié deux factum qui ont provoqué deux réponses5.Pourquoi ce conflit si violent et si long (plus de trois ans) dans un petit diocèse méridional? En 1694 Percin de Montgaillard est à la tête de son diocèse depuis trente ans et il entend bien mener à sa manière la réforme de son clergé. Ce ne sont pas quelques récollets, le seul des ordres nés de la Réforme catholique à s'être installé dans le diocèse, sous l'épiscopat de Pierre-Jacques de Fleyres (1588-1633), qui vont s'y opposer. Les années 1694-97 correspondent à la fin de la guerre de la Ligue d'Augsbourg (1689-97) et à la terrible crise de subsistance de 1693-94. Le gallicanisme de Louis XIV supporte mal l'ampleur des conflits doctrinaux, dans le royaume comme entre la France et Rome. Malgré la «Paix de l'Église», le jansénisme continue à diviser les consciences (Pasquier Quesnel publie son Nouveau Testament de Monsen 1692, Antoine Arnauld meurt en 1694, l'affaire du cas de conscience débute en 1701). Si l'affaire de la Régale avec le pape a débouché sur un accord en 1693, en revanche le quiétisme anime les débats (Fénelon est exilé dans son diocèse en 1697 et madame Guyon est condamnée en 1698). Les multiples crises de l'Église à son sommet ont des répercutions dans les diocèses lointains: pensons au rôle joué par Mgr Soanen depuis son petit diocèse provençal de Sénez contre la bulle Unigenitusen 1717. La réforme épiscopale donne aux évêques la plus grande responsabilité dans leur diocèse et depuis la «grande génération» de la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, celle des Solminihac à Cahors ou des Sourdis à Bordeaux, le modèle du prélat digne, compétent et réformateur est bien installé. Pourquoi alors ce conflit? Ne s'agit-il que d'un problème de discipline ecclésiastique ou faut-il y chercher un écho des conflits nationaux? Le débat relève-t-il du combat janséniste ou de la querelle entre évêques et réguliers Le fonds parisien justifie des travaux amples sur le sujet, voire un livre entier encore à écrire. Plus modestement, cet article voudrait se contenter d'une ébauche de réflexion sur la question à travers les enseignements des documents lyonnais, en acceptant leurs limites, en supposant leur représentativité par rapport à l'ensemble et en dégageant quelques pistes de réflexion.
