Soft cover. Condition: New. 2nd Edition. 8vo, 21.5cm, second edition, [vii]29p., introduction, illustrated wraps, new. ". . . your book lets us, Liam, Clive and me, see this place through the eyes of someone finding his or her way in here for the first time. Many of the details you describe are so familiar to us we barely see them. So it gives me a sense of how we are being perceived. I also feel [that] the grains of sand that have accumulated into this bookstore over the past forty-one years, good and bad, humble and great, represented by this building, will now suddenly be blown away. Your book gives us all a sense of that place, my place, and of a time past. 'Cast a cold eye . . .' Thank you." Patrick McGahern, PatrickMcGahern Books Inc. "The air is thick with that old-book smell, describedby [Heather E. Thomson] as 'the sweet opium wine' of the bookstore." First Edition
Hardbound. Condition: VG. First. Orange boards with color pictorial DJ, 248 pp, hundreds of color and BW illustrations. From the publisher--In 1889, Paris hosted the legendary Exposition Universelle (World's Fair), a massive cultural exhibition which transformed the face of French culture to come. The Eiffel Tower was built for it, the composer Claude Debussy first heard Javanese music there, and the painter Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), reacting against his exclusion from its arts component, organized an exhibit called L'Exposition de Peintures du Groupe Impressionniste et Synthesiste, on the walls of the Cafe Volpini. Presenting the newest works by himself and his friends, it was here that Gauguin premiered what is now known as the Volpini Suite, an amazing portfolio of 11 lithographs printed on radiant canary yellow paper, which marked the coalescence of his various motifs and the commencement of his mature style. Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889, catalog to the exhibit, illustrates the radical nature of the works produced by Gauguin and his friends by examining his paintings, woodcuts, ceramics, prints and drawings related to that landmark exhibition.
