Thorbecke left for China in 1931, where she purchased her first camera. Originally trained as a journalist, she developed into a discerning photographer with a distinctly engaged gaze. Her photographs were accompanied by personal observations and formed the basis for influential publications such as Peking Studies (1934) and People in China (1935). No dust jacket. Colour plate immediately after the introduction by Frederich Schiff (who collaborated with Thorbecke on several of her other books about China and Hong Kong). Thorbecke's subjects for this book came all walks of life, including The Manchu Duke, The Eunuch, and The Ultra-Modern Girl all the way to The Slave and The Cabbage Vendor.
