Der Herr Graf gab deshalb diesem Artikel ein halb offizielles Ansehn [.]". - Gf. Thun-Hohenstein nahm als Offizier des Uhlanenregimentes Erzherzog Karls an den Feldzügen von 1813 und 1815 teil, trat nach dem Friedensschluß aus der Armee aus und widmete sich den Wissenschaften sowie der Verwaltung seiner böhmischen Güter. Als Gründer der ersten böhmischen gegenseitigen Brandschaden-Versicherungsgesellschaft ist ihm die Errichtung der ersten Kettenbrücke in Prag sowie die Anlage des Franzens Kai zu danken. "Im böhmischen Landtage, in welchem er als Oberkämmerer des Königreichs Böhmen die Stelle des Vorsitzenden im Landesausschuß einnahm, befand er sich unter den Führern der Opposition [.] Vom Ausschusse für den 1848er Slavenkongreß wurde der Graf zum Präsidenten gewhält, aber Krankheit verhinderte ihn, den Sitzungen beizuwohnen" (Wurzbach, s. v.). Krankheitshalber zog er sich auch bald darauf aus dem öffentlichen Leben zurück und lebte bis zu seinem Tod in Salzburg.
