Maroon (purple?) fine vertical-ribbed cloth covered boards with blind-stamped scroll decorations on front and back panels; paper label on spines. Good condition at best. Boards are faded, spines are sunned. Losses, chips and frays across edges and corners at head and tail of spines. Board edges are scuffed and rubbed through at fore-edge corners. Text pages are age-toned and with occasional faint smudges. Vol I: Front board panel is detached along with FFEP to page vi. Pencilled writing on end papers and verso to FFEP. Triple ruled borders to front and rear covers. Elaborate gilt inner dentelles. AEG. 11.5ins x 9.25ins, marbled endpapers, xiii, (i), 772pp plus 8 plates (1 folding) and 10pp pedigrees (Fitzalan and Howard families). Also 14 vignette illustrations within the text. Frontis very browned. Some degree of foxing to all the plates, also offsetting to the text pages opposite the plates. The rest of the text is generally very clean. Armorial bookplate of Foley to the front pastedown. Presuemably Fourth Baron Foley who in 1849 married Lady Mary Charlotte Howard - who is listed in the Howard pedigree. A handsomely bound volume. A little rubbed to the edge of the spine. Overall VG. Nb heavy book, weighs over 3kg, would be expensive to post overseas.
