Arbeiten Tombrocks sind u. a. in der National-Galerie Oslo, in der Kunsthalle Hamburg und im Dortmunder Tombrock-Archiv vorhanden. Vollmer (4, 456) gibt irrtümlich eine Abkunft aus Schweden an, das er jedoch erst 1937 als Exilant aufsuchte und wo er 1939 Bert Brecht kennen lernte. Schon in den 20er Jahren arbeitete der sozial engagierte H. T. für Vaganten-Zeitungen und kehrte nach Ende des Nazi-Regimes in die DDR zurück, wo er eine Akademie gründete, bevor er nach einigen Jahren über Dortmund nach Stuttgart ging. DE.

Teilnehmer der Novemberrevolution in Kiel, Mitglied der Kommunistischen Partei, 1919 als Spartakistenführer verhaftet. 1920 nahm er an den bewaffneten Kämpfen gegen den Kapp-Putsch teil und marschierte mit der Roten Ruhrarmee in Dortmund. Als entarteter Künstler emigriert , lernt er 1939 lBertolt Brecht auf einer antifaschistischen Diskussionsveranstaltung kennen). Original-Kohle auf Karton. Bildgröße 60,5 x 81 cm / gerahmt 68,5 x 89 cm. Hans Tombrock (geb. 21. Juli 1895 in Benninghofen; gest. 18. August 1966 in Stuttgart) war ein deutscher Maler. Er arbeitete als Anstreicher, in einer Zeche, als Pferdejunge, Schlepper, Gehilfe und Schiffsjunge. Zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges meldete sich Tombrock freiwillig zur Marine. 1918 desertierte er und wurde Teilnehmer der Novemberrevolution in Kiel. Am Ende des Krieges trat er der Kommunistischen Partei bei. Arbeit fand er im Hörder Hüttenwerk Phönix. Seine Arbeit verlor er jedoch aufgrund politischer Reden, die als aufwieglerisch galten. Während der Unruhen 1919 wurde er als Spartakistenführer verhaftet. 1920 nahm er an den bewaffneten Kämpfen gegen den Kapp-Putsch teil und marschierte mit der Roten Ruhrarmee in Dortmund ein. Anschließend wurde er zu einer langen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Danach Vagabundenleben; 1928 begegnete er Gregor Gog. Erste größere Arbeit, die "Vagabundenmappe". 1933 emigrierte Tombrock, kam schließlich nach Schweden. 1939 lernte er Bertolt Brecht auf einer antifaschistischen Diskussionsveranstaltung kennen. Zwischen den beiden entwickelte sich eine Freundschaft und eine fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit, die ihren Höhepunkt in der Illustration von Brechts "Das Leben des Galilei" fand. Die Stockholmer Zusammenarbeit mit Brecht spiegelt sich in Peter Weiss' Roman "Die Ästhetik des Widerstands" wider. 1949 ging Tombrock in die DDR, 1952 bis 1953 lehrte er an der Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Berlin-Weißensee. 1953 verließ Tombrock die DDR und lebte und arbeitete als freier Künstler in Hamburg, Dortmund und Stuttgart, hielt sich aber auch mehrfach für längere Zeit zum Malen auf den Kanarischen Inseln und in Marokko auf. Tombrock war sechsmal verheiratet und hatte sieben Kinder aus diesen Ehen. Sprache: deutsch.
