In full calf bindings, with decorative gilt to the spines and the gilt crest of St. Paul's School in London to the front boards. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Jean Froissart, often referred to as John Froissart, was one of the most important chroniclers of Medieval France. Froissart's Chronicles are a 14th-century history of the Hundred Years' War. The Chronicles start by describing events leading up to the deposition of King Edward II in 1326, and continue up to 1400, recounting events in western Europe. While they contain some errors, the Chronicles are vitally important to the understanding of 14-century chivalric culture. In full calf bindings. Externally very smart, with only a little rubbing to the joints and extremities. A couple of marks to the rear board of Vol I. Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). A beautiful set of The Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monstrelet. Complete in two volumes. The full title of this volume reads: The Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monstrelet; containing an account of the cruel Civil Wars between the houses of Orleans and Burgundy; of the Possession of Paris and Normandy by the English; their expulsion thence; and of other memorable events that happened in the Kingdom of France, as well as in other countries. A History of fair example, and of great profit to the French. Beginning at the year MCCC., where that of Sir John Froissant finishes, and ending at the year MCCCLXVII., and continued by others to the year MDXVI. Translated from the original French by Thomas Johnes. There is a coloured frontispiece in volume I, and black and white engravings in both volumes. Enguerrand de Monstrelet (c. 1400 20 July 1453), was a French chronicle writer and author of the Chronique de Enguerrand de Monstrelet. He was born in Picardy, most likely into a family that was of the minor nobility. Monstrelet's own writings, dealing with the latter part of the Hundred Years' War, are valuable because they contain a large number of documents which are certainly, and reported speeches which are probably, authentic. The author, however, shows little power of narration; his work, although clear, is dull, and is strongly tinged with the pedantry of its century, the most pedantic in French history. His somewhat ostentatious assertions of impartiality do not cloak a marked preference for the Burgundians in their struggle with France. In half crushed Morocco leather bindings with gilt lettering to the spines, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, smart with just minor shelfwear. Corners are slightly bumped. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
