This book collects firsthand accounts from engineers and managers about the implementation of metal railway tracks in Europe in the late 19th century. It adds to the growing body of evidence that metal tracks are a superior alternative to wooden ties. The book provides in-depth information on the various metal track systems that were experimented with and adopted on different lines, offering valuable insights into the factors that determine whether a metal track system is successful. By including data on maintenance costs and comparing them with those of wooden ties, the book makes a strong case for the economic as well as operational advantages of metal tracks, especially for high-traffic lines. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

This book explores the use of metal in place of wood for railroad ties with the aim of preserving our nation's forests and improving the longevity and safety of rail lines. The author, a Forestry Division chief, draws upon decades of research and data to provide a detailed analysis of this cost-effective alternative. Prioritizing the use of young timber for railroad ties exacts a heavy toll on our natural resources and undermines the future supply. This book provides a well-structured and comprehensive account of the use of metal tiesâ"a viable and sustainable solution. The text delves into the technical details of metal tie implementation, including fastening methods, while also considering the financial implications. Significant for railway managers and engineers, this volume presents a valuable analysis of a solution that could revolutionize rail maintenance, reduce environmental impact, and improve safety on our railroads. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
