First edition, second impression, of this collection of essays examining urban life at the dawn of the Edwardian era. This copy was owned by Herbert Gresford Jones (1870-1958), who held the inner-city incumbency of St. Michael's, Liverpool at the time of publication, with his ownership inscription on the front free endpaper. He subsequently served as Bishop of Warrington. Arthur Cecil Pigou and G. M. Trevelyan contribute essays; the remainder are written by Masterman, F. W. Lawrence, R. A. Bray, Noel Buxton and Walter Hoare, P. W. Wilson, F. W. Head, and G. P. Gooch. Octavo. Original dark green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Ex-Liverpool Public Library, with engraved armorial bookplate and library card to front and rear pastedowns respectively. Infrequent pencil underlining and annotations. Light bumping and wear, fraying to spine head, remnants of shelf label glue to foot of spine, inner hinges cracked, slight separation between various gatherings: a good copy.
