"Originaire de Rochefort s/Mer, E. Trivier s'embarque dès l'âge de seize ans sur un navire de commerce ; déjà, il rêve de traverser l'Afrique d'est en ouest comme Cameron et Stanley. En 1888, le journal La Gironde lui donne la possibilité de réaliser son projet en l'envoyant comme reporter en Afrique. Parti de Bordeaux avec un camarade le 20 août 1888, il atteint Loango le 9 novembre. Par le Stanley Pool, il remonte le Congo escorté par un lieutenant de Tippo-Tip (ancien chef d'escorte de Stanley) et parvient à Kasongo sur le cours supérieur du fleuve en février 1889. A travers le Manyema (avril-mai), il atteint Oudjidji sur le Tanganyika pour élucider en particulier le problème de la rivière Loukouga, dont on ne sait trop si elle est un affluent ou un déversoir du lac. En juillet, il gagne le lac Moéro où il retrouve les traces de Victor Giraud. Malade, il retourne au Tanganyika où les missionnaires anglais de Fuamba le secourent. Fin août 1889, Trivier perd son compagnon, Weissemburger, tué par les indigènes ; abandonné par ses porteurs, il gagne péniblement le lac Nyassa (Livingstone, le 30 octobre) mais ne trouve pas d'embarcation pour descendre le Chiré. Ce n'est que le 1er décembre 1889 qu'un vapeur, la Charles-Janson le conduit à Quelimane. E. Trivier a réalisé la 11e traversée du continent africain, et en moins de un an, ce qui constitue un record" [Numa Broc]. Bel exemplaire.
