Rare portfolio of photographs by G. Lazovsky depicting the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II. Quarto, original publisher's blue cloth with black and silver titles and tooling to the front panel, 31 albumen prints on card mounts with the embossed blind stamp of the photographer and the mounts captioned in Cyrillic with printed slips, each image 6.25 inches by 9.125 inches. The series of photographs in this album cover the coronation festivities from the 10th to the 26th of May 1896. Only two of the images are from theÂCoronation day itself, the 12th, which are of the procession, as there was likely no photography in the cathedral where theÂcoronation proper was held. Portfolio in very good condition. Photographs in near fine condition. The piece measures 10 inches by 13.75 inches. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. We have never seen another set. The coronation of Tsar Nicholas II took place on May 26, 1896 (May 14, Old Style), in the Dormition Cathedral within the Kremlin, Moscow. As the last Emperor of Russia, Nicholas IIâs coronation was a grand and highly ritualized event, symbolizing the divine right of the monarchy. The ceremony followed traditional Orthodox customs, including anointment with holy oil and the placing of the Imperial Crown on his own head, signifying his supreme authority. However, the event was overshadowed by the Khodynka Tragedy, where over a thousand people died in a stampede during public celebrations. This disaster foreshadowed the instability of his reign, which ultimately ended with the fall of the Russian Empire in 1917.

No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. A marvellous matte-finish 5.5" x 7.5" portrait of Nicholas II affixed to its original 5.75" x 8" mount, photograph by C. E. de Hahn & Co., signed at the bottom of the image in Roman characters, in black ink, 'Nicolas, Reval, 1902'. In very fine condition. Tsar Nicholas II signed this photograph during his trip to Reval in Estonia between July 23rd to 26th 1902. During the visit he met with Kaiser Wilhelm for political discussions, and viewed the Russalka memorial, which commemorated the loss of Russian sailors in the 1893 sinking of the Rusalka. .

Three pages,12mo, bifolium, corner marked, mainly good condition. Text: "The Grand Duke is desirous to see the Docks [underlined] on Wednesday, & we thought the best way of peforming it would be in going there by water. | Could we therefore have your Barge on that day - when [underlined] should we embark & at what o'clock [phrase underlined] - for the tide. | Excuse my importunity and believe my ever | Yours most truly | [signature to be deciphered] | [PS] Since writing the above Sir Wm Congreve has made the very just observation that it would be safer for us - not to be dependent upon the tide - to go there by land & return [underlined] by water. So let me request you to order the barge [down?] to the South end of West India Docks to be there about [1?] o'clock." Note: I've found little information about this visit but what I have found suggests that he arrived in England after July 1816.
